Today we received the sad news of Sensei John Harquail’s passing 😔 Sensei John was a true gentleman on and off the mat, and a true inspiration to all, he will be truly missed.
One of Senpai Callum’s favourite memories of his whole Jitsu career was meeting Sensei John for the first time on the mat in 2016, when Senpai Callum was only 15 and an orange belt! Sensei John had told Callum to punch him in his face, and when Callum went to do so he pulled the punch and Sensei John did NOT move! Sensei Johns reply was “I told you to punch me!” 😂🙈 Now, egotistical, Callum went to punch Sensei John again, this time with more energy, speed and strength… and in the same run up, Sensei John simply outstretched his leg and kicked Callum to the ground, flying across the mat. (CALLUM WAS NOT INJURED!).
To many, this may sound unethical or too rough for a junior at the time. HOWEVER, this showed Callum the beauty of Japanese Jiu Jitsu, and the effectiveness of a simple atemi/technique and that it doesn’t matter how old you are, how big your are or how small you are, there is always a way to defend yourself! Sensei John taught Callum that day to NEVER underestimate an opponent.
Straight after the national event Callum HAD to get Sensei John to sign his (now retro 😂) TJF book.
Thank you Sensei John for the lessons and memories you have bestowed unto us all.
On behalf of Nechells Jiu Jitsu Club, condolences to your family, and may you rest in everlasting peace 🥋❤️
