ππ©βπΌConsiderations for Returning to Exercise after having a Baby π©βπΌπ
I provide specialist talks to help women in the gym and sporting environments so they can have the knowledge and skills to help stay active and exercise safely and effectively π.
This is my talk on returning to exercise after having a baby. This is a particularly important topic because, for example; we know that approximately 1 in 4 runners do not return to running after childbirth and that pelvic floor symptoms can be a major barrier to continued exercise (Christopher et al.,2024).
Pregnancy and childbirth can alter the core system by the effects on the:
π«Diaphragm-
Altered position, excursion and breathing mechanics
πͺAbdominal wall-
Stretching, altered strength and endurance and possible diastasis
πΈPelvic Floor -
Reduced strength, endurance and coordination in some women
π¦΄Posture and Lumbopelvic system-
Altered loading mechanics and increased risk of musculoskeletal symptoms
Itβs important that these areas are addressed to provide a whole system approach to returning back to exercise after having a baby ππ. Itβs more than just pelvic floor exercises and abdominal exercises, rehabilitation should be looking at how these 4 systems work together ππͺ.
