Hiya Stoats!! 🧗‍♂️As a fun end of year recap we are hosting the ‘UBMC Awards 2026’ as a fun social to wrap up the year for those who can’t go on Summer Trip! It’s a normal club social but with a formal twist!! So make sure you wear your best formal outfits and attend to see if you are nominated for any fun awards!

‼️ATTENTION STOATS‼️

It’s soon time for SUMMER TRIP 🌴 to the beautiful Pembrokeshire 🌊. A week of camping and climbing in South Wales awaits from the 7th-14th June. 🏕️🧗‍♂️

As this is one of our longest trips, and with fuel prices through the roof, 🚗 it is a bit more expensive than the usual trips:
- Non-Drivers ~ £110
- Drivers ~ £90
Although, this is subject to change based on numbers for the trip. 👥

Your ticket includes:
- Travel to and from Pembrokeshire 🚙🚗🛻
- Travel to and from the crags each day 🚶‍♂️
- Camping for 7 nights ⛺️🪵
- A BBQ! 🍖🔥
- ⁠Accsss to all the best climbing and surfing Pembrokeshire has to offer! 🧗‍♀️🏄‍♂️
There is also the option to order the Summer Trip T-Shirt for ~£10.

We are aware a week may be too long for some people with jobs or other commitments, so there is an opportunity to come for less time (dependent on drivers and gear), so please still sign up and let me know what dates you need.

Trad Day Trip! 🌫️🧗‍♀️🪨

Special mention to both gear secs exercising some truly heinous teaching. Poor Jacob is potentially scarred for life by Rob's choice of his first pseudo lead, witnessed by a large audience. Sam questionably decided it was a great idea to weigh some genuinely pathetic gear placements. Thank God for Erin and Tom 🙏

Sam's report:
Possibly the best attended Trad Day Trip of all time led to 44 of our stoats heading to the misty peak district, while the mist meant our original plan of the roaches made us switch to Harborough rocks, it did luckily block our view of the factory a stones throw away from the crag. The morning was not without problems though as our trip organiser decided to catch up on sleep while everyone waited at north gate, some frantic knocking and calling led to a very sheepish gear sec who was only 15 minutes late in the end, and he wasn't the latest either

The drive was shorter than usual being on the more southern side of the peak district and was interrupted by Fergus' warning of potholes, which had taken two of his tires. Luckily elfie offered one so he could keep the trip going. Entering into the mist, we came to the crag and started teaching the freshers how to place some gear and to make anchors. This was then followed by some pseudo leading with numb fingers. As the weather barely let up, the slightly chilly stoats made the traditional trip to maccies and overwhelmed a poor McDonalds with 50 orders.

INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY!
We have so many incredible, strong women both in and leading our society. Climbing has historically been a male dominated sport, even the UBMC did not allow women for a long time. We are lucky to have our amazing prez Zoe proving how great women can be at leading, as well as four other women on committee, and a smashing women's climbing team, regularly winning podium and finals positions.

It is tough to be constantly assumed a weaker, shorter, less courageous gender in a sport that relies heavily on strength, span and courage. Walking into Depot every Monday to a heavily male filled gym can be challenging. Women face prejudice, societal constraints, body image, balancing extreme sport with hormonal cycles, sexism and more during climbing. In a survey of 3,000 female climbers conducted by Shelma Jun in 2016, over 76 percent of respondents said they felt like another climber assumed they were less experienced because of their gender. I myself have been assumed to be 'with' the climbing instructor when I was in fact the lead and only qualified climbing instructor teaching the session alongside an unqualified male belayer, an assumption likely due to gender. Yet we have so many Stoaty women crushing trad, bouldering, mountaineering, UBMC committee positions and more every day, proving it's a women's space too!

We are seeing a change in this sport with women's evenings, amazing role models such as Erin McNeice, the Cholita climbers etc and an increase of women in our own society! Media coverage of women in climbing is increasing, women in leadership roles in the relevant industries too, as well as women climbing in general are also on the rise!

Don't forget to avoid assumptions, such as assuming experience, ability and more, let women speak and make climbing an encouraging, safe space for all genders.
