Friends of Spring Lane

Friends of Spring Lane Friendsofspringlane is a residents' group whose main aim to increase the use of Spring Lane Playing fields for organised sport.

Our long term aim is to reinstall traditional institutions such as district level football/cricket and athletics associations to dovetail the excellent work of the School Sport Partnerships. The current situation regarding Unattached EDUCATIONAL sites are a great concern across the city. The understandable need for Basic provision in schools and housing has certain pressures but it is essential th

at these sites maintain an educational/sporting focus in development moving forward. Realistically if we could develop 16 - 20 unattached fields we would have the infrastructure to deliver world class inter school competition that naturally developed players and moved them into appropriate clubs. Spring Lane in particular could be HQ for Erdington district football and cricket while Yenton Playing fields could be provide additional facilities for schools towards the northern edge of the district. When Birmingham School Sports was initially developed in the 1950's it was based on the council model of 10 districts and easch district had associations in football, cricket, athletics, rounders, and netball. The winner from each district progressed to the all Birmingham competition of the best 10 schools across the city.

20 unattached sites (2 per district) would provide the basic infrastructure necessary to embed this properly over a 12 month period. With cost reductions to BCC being paid out of schools Sport Premium - Pupil Premium - Staffing using increased PE teacher grant up £1.3m. Grants available through club/community links would provide funding for capital investment in facilities. The challenge of the future must be to do something different because the current state of our 32 unattached sites is not acceptable never mind outstanding.

Can we ask if this could be a good idea? Given the cost of some providers now and the stauatory element of caring for children, could this give those children opportunities they wouldn’t have ever had.

So many questions, but at least it’s an idea of how we improve things as it’s undeniable that the current system is failing the children that end up under the custody of Birmingham at the moment.

This is a question, so please be thoughtful in your responses and refrain from party bashing as whoever does it, summat has to change and the sooner the better.

More answers are needed from local authorities and police after three children's care homes in Sandwell, Coventry and Telford were downgraded to 'inadequate' with shocking examples of danger

Can Erdington gain promotion in their first season in the WCL. Think it will hinge on the return of Unity a week Saturday, but we need to get a result this week away at Manor.

A great explanation of why this place needs to thrive.

Sport England has published its first Areas of Research Interest (ARI) – highlighting the evidence gaps and priority research topics where academics can make the biggest difference to sport and physical activity policy and practice. Explore the ARIs and join our network to collaborate on research that tackles inequalities and drives real-world impact.

Our overarching goal is to tackle inequalities in access to sport and physical activity. That means supporting people and communities who’ve traditionally been excluded, and identifying – then removing – the barriers they face. To do this well, we need better evidence on what works, for whom, and in what contexts.

Last Time. 2025 Season.
Birmingham Bulls v Leicester Panthers

We find ourselves with one last test this 2025 season as we take on our oldest rivals in the shape of the Leicester Panthers who have parried away all of the opposition of Division Two and are looking to bounce straight back to D1. It comes down to this game! Winner takes all for their place in the middle tier!
We need YOUR support next Sunday down at Erdington RFC on Kingsbury Road, Kickoff at 3pm.

Bulls Back to Training! 1pm - 4pm now confirmed for this Sunday 22nd June

Our next game is our final regular season one which will be at home v Sandwell on Sunday, 6th July. In the meantime, we have two weeks of training to prepare and give ourselves the best chance of reversing the 31-0 defeat we suffered at Willenhall a few weeks ago. Since that game, we are 2-0-1 and so enter the game in good form and mindset.

The Birmingham Bulls are ALWAYS recruiting so its not too late to contact us and see what we're about and what we can offer you as well as what you have to bring to the team.
The Bulls have been a fixture in Birmingham for 42 years, taking in 4 UK National titles, 4 more final appearances and also a European Bronze Medal when we became the first team to ever play in a European Championship.
We have experienced coaches (Britball legends as we say around here) and some exciting plans for the immediate and the future so why not give it a go!
