STRESS!! 😵😵😵😵😵😵
It’s bad, right??? Or is it?
You may not have heard of this but there is a good stress. It’s call ‘eustress’.
You are feeling eustress if you feel eager, excited, thrilled, in a state of flow, proud, resilient, determined or fulfilled.
Want to know how you can use this to your advantage? Read on............!
It’s eustress that fuels our achievements and successes. In the short term it gives us an energy boost when we want to accomplish something challenging, for example, public speaking. In the long term is can keep us focused on working at thing, such as studying or setting up a business.
So stress can be good for you! Eustress can help us achieve things and grow in confidence as we achieve things in life.
A couple of examples
- Starting a new job – adapting to a new role, new colleagues, culture and a different way of working
- Working towards a big event – keeps you focussed on the preparation with the end result in mind, like a wedding or public speaking event
- Networking – growing or developing a business by meeting new people and demonstrating what we can contribute
Now I know a lot of you will be reading this and thinking those things may cause you to experience bad stress, or distress, but it’s all about perception. How you perceive something determines how you will react to it and how it influences your behaviour.
If you think about how you respond when you’re stressed or when you’re excited you will notice your physiology is the same. Your pulse rate rises, you feel agitated (that can be good or bad), and you get butterflies in your stomach.
So the upshot it you can choose how you feel when you face a challenge, you can harness it to feel excited about what’s ahead or you can choose to let it overwhelm you. Remember this next time you feel out of your comfort zone.
What will you choose?
