Barnt Green Sailing Club

Barnt Green Sailing Club The official page for Barnt Green Sailing Club Barnt Green Sailing Club is one of the premier sailing clubs in the West Midlands.

The club is based at Upper Bittell reservoir in rural North Worcestershire but we are only a short distance from Birmingham and the M5 and M42 motorways. We welcome new members of all sailing abilities and as an RYA Champion Club we pride ourselves on providing training for dinghy cruising and racing to RYA standards for juniors and adults. We have a fleet of club boats which members can use inclu

ding Pico, Lark, Optimist and Cadet class dinghies. Organised racing at the club takes place all year round on Sundays and on Wednesday evenings during British summertime. We also enjoy casual sailing at other times especially on Saturday afternoons during the summer months. The clubhouse provides a bar open to members and their guests and also benefits from WiFi connection. The ladies and gents changing rooms and showers were upgraded in 2016.

It is officially one of the hottest days of the year πŸ”†. While we want you to enjoy the sunshine, please be careful around the water! 🌊

If you find yourself in an emergency, knowing exactly how to signal for help can save your life. Make sure you know these vital distress signals:

If you are in the water and need to signal for help, ensure you stay afloat and conserve energy.

Float first: Before signalling, roll onto your back, extend your arms and legs, and get your breathing under control.

Raise ONE arm straight up: Lift a single arm straight into the air. You can hold it steady or wave it slowly from side to side. Keep your fist closed or your hand open, the key is the single vertical arm.

Shout for help: Use your voice to attract attention while your arm is raised.

Never raise both arms: Lifting both arms out of the water removes your natural buoyancy and will quickly push your head underwater.

Avoid frantic splashing or waving, as this drains your energy and makes it much harder to keep your airway above the surface.

If you are on a boat:

Repeatedly raise and lower your outstretched arms to your sides.

⚠️ CRITICAL SAFETY RULE: ⚠️
NEVER wave your hands above your head. This is incredibly common, but it is easily misinterpreted as a friendly greeting. People might just smile and wave back instead of realising you are in trouble.

Please stay hydrated, keep an eye out for each other, and share this post to keep your friends and family safe today! πŸ’™
