Do you use a line when putting?
A very good study recently found that putting without a line actually beat using one!
But by only one shot over every six rounds... 😳

So you might think what a waste of time that was!
It wasn’t though as we can learn some very important lessons from it.

The test was to compare using the line on all putts versus not using it at all. Delve a little deeper though and we find:

- The line helped on short putts as holing them relies heavily on starting the ball in the right direction. (Being off by just one degree is enough to miss the hole from 10 feet.)

- Mid range putts don’t show much of a difference as almost everyone will take 2 putts from between 10 and 20 feet.

- It was on long putts that the line lost it. Holing putts of over 20 feet are so unlikely that having perfect aim becomes less important. The main goal here is to avoid taking 3 or more putts and as most golfers will focus on alignment over pace when using the line, they will take 3 putts more often as a consequence.

So in theory, we should all use the line on all short putts but never outside of 10 feet, and most would probably do well with this strategy. However, I would suggest taking some time to test it. I’ve seen many golfers putt much better with the line and yet it has never helped me so I never use it.
Find what works for you and stick with it.

One thing that isn’t usually helped by too much analysis is confidence, which is key to ongoing successful performance.
I would describe confidence in golf as your ability to visualise the one outcome wanted until the ball has been struck. Anything else clouds your focus and will likely corrupt your technique.
