Struggling with an over-the-top swing? 🏌️♂️
Here are 3 simple drills you can try on the range to help change that path 👇
1️⃣ Drop the trail foot back
For a right-handed golfer, pull your right foot back so the toes are roughly level with the middle, or even the heel, of your left foot.
This closed stance gives the trail hip more room and encourages the arms and club to work on a more rounded arc around the body. It can make it much easier to experience the feeling of the club approaching the ball shallower and more from the inside, rather than throwing the club out towards the ball from the top.
Don’t force it. Make some smooth swings and let the setup help create the movement.
2️⃣ Build yourself a basket gate 🧺
Use two empty range baskets to create a clear pathway for the club.
Place one by your trail foot, roughly level with the ball, and the second forward of the ball by your lead foot and slightly closer to you.
Now simply make swings without hitting either basket.
External constraints like this are great because you don’t have to constantly think about where the club should be. The baskets give you instant feedback and encourage your body and club to organise themselves around the task. Similar obstacle drills are used specifically to help golfers change an excessive out-to-in path.
3️⃣ Use your golf bag as a feedback station 🎒
Extend your driver out of the bag and position it so you’ve got a reference for where your head is at address.
The goal is to avoid excessively moving your head and upper body towards the golf ball during the downswing.
When the pelvis and body move towards the ball, the chest can stand up and the arms can get pushed outwards, making it much harder to deliver the club from the inside.
You don’t need to make your swing perfect overnight. Start slowly, exaggerate the new feeling and gradually build the speed back up. 🎯
Give these 3 drills a go next time you’re at the range and let me know which one works best for you! ⛳️
