Today we celebrate International Women’s Day and the incredible women who make our judo family at Westerleigh Judokwai so special. 💜🥋
Women have played a powerful role in the history of judo. Although the sport was created in 1882, women have been training, teaching and shaping judo for more than a century. Over time they challenged barriers and fought for equal opportunities to compete, and in 1992 women’s judo was finally included as a full medal sport at the Olympic Games. Since then, female judoka across the world have continued to raise the standard of the sport and inspire generations that followed.
At Westerleigh, we are proud to see that same spirit every week on our mats. We have incredible women who train with determination, push themselves to compete, and show younger athletes what courage and commitment look like. We have female coaches and role models who guide, support and encourage others to believe in themselves.
But the impact of women in our club goes far beyond competition. The mums, carers, volunteers and supporters who bring athletes to training, cheer from the sidelines, help organise events and lift people up when things get tough are a huge part of what makes our community so strong.
Judo teaches respect, perseverance and mutual support — and the women in our club embody those values every single day. They inspire our athletes not just through their strength, but through their kindness, resilience and willingness to help others grow.
Today we celebrate the women who train, coach, support and lead. Thank you for everything you bring to our mats and to our community. You help make Westerleigh Judokwai the welcoming, inspiring place that it is.
Happy International Women’s Day. 💜
