Friday 4 September saw Luke Chapman, currently our most highly rated player (while still a junior!), accept the challenge of his first Simultaneous Display. 15 cub members and one visitor played against him and Luke only lost one, against Michael Hayward. He drew against Harry Morter, Bill Tracey and Oli Balp. He beat everyone else over an intense couple of hours.

On Friday 14th August, we held a time handicap tournament. It was won by Luke Chapman – congratulations! On the most severe time allocation he won all 4 games. Here he is pictured holding the larger and historic club Handicap trophy, plus the Time Handicap award.

Luke celebrated recently his winning the joint 2026 championship at Hastings Chess Club, an amazing accomplishment, not forgetting his debut earlier this month at the British Championship.

For the next of of our summer events, the club will be holding a 960 event on 10th July.
There will be four rounds with a time control of 15 minutes plus 5 second increments.
In 960 chess the pawns start in their normal position but the major pieces will be in different positions.
Each round will have a different arrangement.
There may be as few as 2 pieces off their normal starting position or there could be several.
There are no prizes for this event.

19th June saw our annual blitz tournament and our congratulations go to overall winner Luke Chapman, pictured here with Chairman Bill Tracey.
Luke took the trophy with 4.5/5.

This season Bexhill will once again be offering a series of ECF-rated rapid events that will make up our summer Grand Prix season for our members.

This year we will have a total of 7 events. Each event will be a four round Swiss tournament with a time control of 15+5. Points will be collected throughout the summer with each player’s top 5 performances counting towards their Grand Prix total. The tournaments will take place during normal Friday evening meetings and are open to all Bexhill chess club members.

Dates will be as follows:

Grand Prix 1: May 15th 2026

Grand Prix 2: June 5th 2026

Grand Prix 3: June 26tth 2026

Grand Prix 4 :July 17th 2026

Grand Prix 5: August 7th 2026

Grand Prix 6: August 28th 2026

Grand Prix 7: September 18th 2026

Each member is welcome to play in as many or as few events as they like. However the top five scores will contribute to a player’s Grand Prix total.

Awards for a variety of performance measurements are under consideration following the reduction from 10 to 7 events this year.

Rating aspects depending on ECF category of membership is also being reviewed.

Registration for each event will be at 7pm prompt. With rounds commencing at approximately 7.15, 7.55, 8.35 and 9.15.

We will try to publish an/or update the results of each Grand Prix and the ongoing Grand Prix tables promptly on this Bexhill chess club website.

In the event of ties, the tie-break process should be clarified in due course.
