Lower Hopton Ladies 4–3 Beverley Town Ladies
Beverley Town Ladies bowed out of the FA Cup following a spirited 4–3 defeat away at Lower Hopton Ladies in a thrilling and fiercely contested cup tie.
Beverley made the perfect start, taking the lead after just three minutes. Faith Thompson threaded a superb through ball into the path of Kim Ward, who raced through and rounded the goalkeeper. With defenders scrambling back onto the line, Ward showed composure to rifle the ball beyond them and give Town an early advantage.
Beverley doubled their lead on 22 minutes with another moment of quality. Amy Drury delivered a delightful lofted free-kick from deep, finding Corinne Wilshere, who produced a deft flicked header that sailed over the advancing goalkeeper and into the net.
The hosts pulled a goal back nine minutes before half-time, converting from close range following a goalmouth scramble after an inswinging corner.
The match continued to produce plenty of physical challenges, with Jess Wilson receiving a caution for a challenge on the Lower Hopton winger. The booking proved frustrating for the visitors given that a challenge of a similar nature from the opposition had gone unpunished just moments earlier.
Lower Hopton then levelled before the break, capitalising on a loose ball at the back before slotting past Lydia Webb to send the sides into half-time level at 2–2.
After the interval, the home side continued to build pressure and eventually completed the turnaround, finding the bottom right corner. Webb got a glove to the effort but was unable to keep it out as Lower Hopton moved 3–2 ahead.
The hosts then extended their advantage from the penalty spot, calmly converting after a challenge inside the Beverley penalty area to make it 4–2.
Corinne Wilshere was shown a second yellow card with 10 minutes left to play.
Despite the setback, Beverley refused to give up. Kaz Mason gave the visitors renewed hope with an excellent low finish to make it 4–3 and set up a tense finale.
Town pushed for an equaliser right until the final whistle, but ultimately it wasn't to be.
A hugely spirited effort from Beverley Town Ladies ends their FA Cup journey at the first hurdle, but there were plenty of positives to take from a game in which Town showed quality, character and determination throughout.
