Borders Mixed Winter League Division 1

After 3 fixtures of the winter league season already complete, the Berwick team currently find themselves in the thick of it and well positioned at the half way point.

Stand out performer Mark currently sits 4th in the borders on the form chart, with an impressive 4 wins and only 1 loss ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ ๐ŸŽพ

You canโ€™t say we arenโ€™t keen! Practice match today on a court covered in ice and snow.

It was nice to finally play on a surface that matched our level of control.

Highlights included falling over without being touched, missing balls we could normally miss perfectly well on dry ground, and discovering muscles we wonโ€™t be using again until next winter.

On the plus side, the court remains undefeated. ๐ŸŽพโ„๏ธ

Thanks to Jack, Michael and Derek for a great morning ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป

A great win in howling winds yesterday meant Berwick finished second in the Borders over 40s mixed league for 2025. Level on points with Melrose 1 but Melrose clinched the title with more rubber wins. A brilliant result with some super tennis played over the previous 10 or so weeks! Have a brilliant Christmas everyone and hope to see more of you on court in 2026!

2025 Tennis Borders 40+ Mixed Doubles Division 1:

As the opportunities for having a hit (in the winter months) are reduced for the majority of members, due to light and weather, there is no let up for the BTC 40+ mixed doubles team.

12/10/25: BTCโ€™s opening fixture couldnโ€™t get much harder, than a tie against the strong Duns (1) team. With Sue and Mark showing early signs that an upset could be on the cards, as they just got edged out by Suzanne and Nick. In the other fixture, the tie break queen Karen and Derek answered back by taking the decider against Susan and James. 3-2 to Duns(1) before the switch. With club captains Sue and Mark knowing what was required, it was no suprise they delivered, winning their second match in straight sets. With one doubles pairing done, they could only look on to see how it would play out from 3-4 to BTC. Karen and Derek secured the first set of an excellent contest, thus guaranteeing a draw at minimum, which wouldโ€™ve been more than enough of a prize to wish for before a shot was played. However it is no suprise that going into the final set of the day (and another tie breaker) poised at 4-5 to BTC overall, Karen and Derek came out victorious in what is a huge result for the BTC club. 4-6 ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ–ค ๐ŸŽพ

19/10/25: With last Sundays result still fresh and the BTC team still flying from it, the pairings of Karen and Derek and Sue and Mark travelled to Melrose for the second fixture of the 40+ mixed doubles league. With excellent tennis being played in tricky conditions by the BTC team and by Jennie, Kate, Rory and Charles from Melrose, it was a great spectacle to watch on a Sunday afternoon. The BTC team managed to get back in the cars and travel home with a 0-8 win overall, and have really positioned themselves well in the league after the first two fixtures ๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ–ค ๐ŸŽพ

The final fixture on Tuesday night in the โ€˜Borders Mixed Doubles Division 1 Leagueโ€™ was played out at Kelso with both Berwick and Peebles (1) making the journey.

Peebles arrived knowing that a favourable result would secure their standing as the best mixed team in the Borders, before the league splits into a top 4 KO format. Berwick just out of reach from being in contention to make the cut regardless of any result.

The strong Peebles pairings navigated the first matches well, coming through with only 1 set dropped and edging a championship tie break.

The second matches were not as straight forward with Hannah and Ross providing an excellent performance with some superb hitting that caught the eyes of both of the other playing courts mid-points, clocking the only sets for the Berwick team.

The tie concluded under the lights, with a convincing 10-3 win for Peebles (1), who will now go into the KO phase as favourites.

Thanks to Kelso Orchard Tennis Club for allowing use of the courts. Best of luck to Peebles on their final push ๐Ÿ‘ ๐ŸŽพ

Highlight of the day: a special mention to Hannah who managed to leap frog 10 places and finish in the top 20 rankings within the full mixed doubles roster ๐Ÿฆ ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Last week saw 4 of the Berwick Tennis Club members make the trip to Melrose and St Boswells to take part in the Tennis Borders Adult Confined 25 Competition.

With the top players in the area all in the mix, our Berwick representatives put on superb displays with Hannah and Ross in the mixed doubles and Judith and Karen in the womenโ€™s doubles.

Both teams battled well and got to the Quater Final stages before exiting the competition.

Judith and Karen managed to continue their journey in the consolation event, picking up a final win with a 10-7 championship tie break . ๐Ÿ† Karen continues to keep her 100% record in championship tie breaks this season ๐Ÿฆ

The club, committee and all its members are extremely proud of the 4 competitors and how they represented the club in the competition ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’› ๐ŸŽพ

The penultimate Borders Tennis Mixed League Division 1 fixture on Tuesday night arrived, with the Berwick team having all but secured league status for next season, after Sundays heroics. The Berwick team hosted title chasing St Boswells 1, with Pier Fields providing a perfect leveller for any difference in league positions, with wind and rain that would be fitting for a night in December

Berwick got off to the best possible start on the night, when all team members reported to Team Captain Sue, bang on 6pm ๐Ÿ‘€ ๐Ÿฆ ๐Ÿจ

With the weather behaving, St Boswells showed no signs of any pressure and all 3 teams appeared to be striking the ball well. However, things were to change quickly, as the clouds changed and the wind picked up so did the Berwickers:

Michael and Hannah holding their own against one of the strongest pairings that have graced the hallowed carpet this season

Sean and Karen racing into a 6-1 lead against their opposite 2โ€™s, before โ€œthe entertainersโ€ decided to follow standardise practice and allow the second set to be reversed by the same score and then go on to win the championship tie break

Sue and Mark somehow finding even more angles and touches than what was on display on Sunday

It was amazing to see the Berwick team really playing with the shackles off, confidence high, but more importantly smiles on the faces

With light drawing in fast and the time limit approaching, both Berwick and St Boswells pushed hard to finish towards end of sets/matches. With Berwick pulling off the upset with an 8-6 win, which seamed cruel on such a talented St Boswell team, who will no doubt keep fighting until the end of the season. The Berwickers couldnโ€™t possibly push for a top 4 finish could we? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Highlight of the day: The Berwick teams de-brief (post fixture). In this discussion it was clear how much progress the team has made, in what is such a competitive league. It was also noted that there is a huge thanks to all club and committee members who continue to help out the clubs overall strategy and the league teams in Menโ€™s, Womenโ€™s and Mixed competitions with practice involvement, filling in when the call comes and continuing to be part of the club progression as a whole ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’› ๐ŸŽพ

Yesterday afternoon saw a huge clash in the Tennis Borders 2025 Mixed League Division 1. A strong Berwick team travelling to take on an equally strong Peebles 2 team.

Both teams knew a win on a sunny Sunday, would keep survival in their own hands with minimal fixtures remaining.

The first points on the board came from Hannah and Ross, handling the pressure of 1st seeds really well and injecting confidence through the team.

Karen and Sean pushed Berwickโ€™s advantage forward by edging a nail biter against their fellow 2nd seeds. A blistering start in set 1 was answered immediately by the strong Peebles pairing in set 2. A 0-5 deficit in the champs tie break woke the Berwick team, and they managed to somehow fight back for the win. The couple have built the reputation of being the comeback kings in the last few weeks.

With the overall meeting in the balance, and the sun setting behind the Peebles hills, creating a landscape suitable for a modern western, a straight shootout was exactly what both seed 3 teams served up! A sure contender for match of the season, that went back and forth in the championship tie break, creating sweaty PALMS on the sidelines! The match ending with Berwick squeezing a 2-1 win. Sue and Mark using experience and composure when the Berwick team needed them the most ๐Ÿฆ ๐Ÿฆ huge performance guys ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›

Berwick travelling home with battle scars but valuable points after a 6-8 win ๐ŸŽพ

Highlight of the day: This has to be one of the best clubs to play tennis! The scenary, competition and hospitality makes the long travel well worth it! All the best to Peebles 2 in their season run in ๐Ÿ‘

A quick note to commend the efforts of both Hannah and Ross who are close to entering the top 20 rankings for their doubles performances ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Tuesday night saw another home clash for the Berwick Mixed Doubles Team in Division 1.

With Melrose 1 pushing for a strong end of season finish, with second place in their sights, the Berwick team were underdogs from the off.

With a marathon first match between both seed 2 teams lasting almost 2 hours, the wide gap Melrose established was a tale the Berwick team were so familiar with.

Melrose ran out 11-3 winners on the night with convincing performances from all 3 teams, but Berwick once again continue to show that the quality is there to maintain a position in the league come next season.

Highlight of the night: The Victoria Sponge cake was back ๐Ÿฐ

A quick note to wish Michael (from the Melrose team) a swift recovery after an injury on the night, brought the curtain down early, on what was another nail biter of a match. Michael has provided two of these in his last two trips to Berwick ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ ๐ŸŽพ

A quick turn around needed for Berwick as a huge clash at Peebles awaits this Sunday.
