TWEEDMOUTH RANGERS 0 HADDINGTON ATHLETIC 4

After two weekends of League Cup action, Tweedmouth returned to East of Scotland League duty with this rearranged fixture versus a Haddington team still chasing Leith Athletic for top spot in Conference 'A'. With that target in mind, the visitors were happy to leave Old Shielfield with three points and a clean sheet but they didn't win at a canter. Rangers, missing four regulars through injury, worked really hard as they battled for 90 minutes in front of a 150 plus crowd.

They were also hit by the injury jinx once more. The game had hardly started when Michael Robinson pulled up at the end of his first run. Onfield treatment enabled him to continue but he didn't see out the first half and was replaced by Yassine Essalhi.

Tweedmouth's early resistance included a well read Evan Smith interception and a smart cut out from Craig Heath before keeper Niall Frampton, making his competitive debut, dived to make a one handed save from Shaun Hill. Haddington did have the ball in the net after 18 minutes but the 'goal' was disallowed as there was a handball in the lead up. The next one, five minutes later, did count, Gabri Auriemma creating the opportunity for Hill's superb strike into the roof of the net.

Recent signing from Craigroyston, Dylan Tait, had to wait patiently to score as a miskick was followed by a blast over the bar and then a save from Frampton. Guy McGarry was twice off target ahead of Tait flicking in a cross from the right to give Hi Hi a two goal interval lead.

Essalhi came close on the end of Archie Roue's 49th minute curling free kick. He was also involved in the incident which saw the visitors reduced to ten men. Outside his area, Dale Cornet made contact as Essalhi stumbled attempting to make good Regan Graham's onward ball and, as last defender, was shown red. Haddington responded by pulling off outfielder Robbie Neave and bringing on sub goalie Robbie Stirling who saved the free kick.

Rangers' Craig Bell got in a good shot before Frampton punched clear Auriemma's free kick but the former Durham City man was beaten again on 65 minutes when, right in front of goal, McGarry turned in Ross King's cross. McGarry then missed from almost exactly the same position.

Tweedmouth kept fighting. Due to Joao Vieira's determined run, the ball ended up inside the visitors' box but neither Essalhi, Roue nor Bell could take control of it as it bobbed about. Sean Campbell released a bouncer off Graham's pass but a deflection sent it for a corner.

Swings and roundabouts. Whilst the sending off seemed harsh in the context of a largely cleanly contested affair, there were doubts about the validity of the final goal. Auriemma's corner struck McGarry's head and then the bar, the referee ruling the ball crossed the line as it came down.

TWEEDMOUTH RANGERS 1 JEANFIELD SWIFTS 6

Quick and confident with the ball at their feet and allowing Tweedmouth little time on the ball, Premier Division Jeanfield Swifts proved to be the best East of Scotland team the Berwick side have met so far this season.

To compound Rangers' woes, the Perth club's haul included a penalty and two own goals. Worse, Rangers lost Jamie Heath, carried off with a serious injury after only 14 minutes.

Yet, the score remained at 0-0 until the 35th minute. Rangers were first to get inside the opposition's penalty area through Sean Campbell and Michael Robinson but it was their keeper, Mark Walters, who made the first save getting off the ground to deny Rannoch Ramsay an early goal.

Several Swifts' bids to spark attacks up the left failed because the ball was pumped too far but when Chris Scott went right his 19th minute shot finished a fraction outside the post.

Both teams went on to squander good chances in one on one situations. First, Robinson was through with only Sean Dalton left to beat but the keeper, on loan from St. Johnstone, stopped the shot with his foot. Despite Rangers' belief he was offside, with only Walters in front of him, Connor McLaren was able to continue only to hit the ball wide.

It took a penalty to break the deadlock. Fraser Smith made no mistake with the spot kick after Evan Smith fouled Shaun Struthers near the edge of the area. Two minutes later, a rapid raid up the right culminated in Struthers cheekily back heeling the ball into the net.

Early in the second half, the visitors' next two goals also came within two minutes of each other. With Walters' vision impaired by the sun, Craig Heath, pressed by a wall of attackers, attempted a back pass which squeezed over the line at the near post. A long ball downfield led to former Berwick Rangers' player Paul Simpson coolly slotting home a fourth goal.

With the Riverside Park side now very much in command, Walters scrambled to turn away a dangerous, spinning Fraser Smith free kick. In a rare well-worked Rangers' attack, Craig Bell got the ball across to Robinson at the far post but again Dalton came out on top.

With 10 minutes left, Jeanfield advanced in numbers leaving Gary Fergus to practically walk in the fifth goal.

Tweedmouth's score came via route one. Substitute Yassine Essalhi marked his return to action after a long absence by sweeping the ball into the net after beating Dalton to Walters' hefty punt from the other end. It would have provided a consolation ending to the game for the home side but Swifts weren't finished and Fraser Smith's late corner led to a second own goal.

GLENROTHES 5 TWEEDMOUTH RANGERS 1

Warout Stadium, home of Glenrothes F.C., was the destination for Tweedmouth Rangers' fifth trip of the season to Fife as they kicked off their East of Scotland League Cup sectional programme against the team currently lying second in the League's 'B' Conference.

Tweedmouth struggled to make their passes count on a soft and uneven pitch which wouldn't let the ball roll. More familiar with the terrain, the hosts coped better though tackling from both sides was often scrappy.

In between a player from each side losing their footing, Rangers' keeper Mark Walters was called into action with the first save of the game but had little chance of stopping Lea Schiavone's 8th minute opener, a cracking volley high into the far corner of the net. It would quickly have been 2-0 if Walters hadn't managed to go low to scoop away a long free kick just before it crossed the line.

So Glenrothes had to wait until the 19th minute to double their lead when ex-East Fife and Kelty Hearts man Stuart Cargill weaved his way through a gap between defenders. Cargill was gifted a second goal after the pitch played tricks with Rhys Dixon's intended clearance.

The final 15 minutes of the half saw Tweedmouth more often inside home territory. They defied mass marking to send Drew Cummings forward but his final ball was wide. Darren Gillon and Sean Campbell combined to put Cummings through again before he was robbed in the tackle.

Home goalie Adam Shaw finally had a save to make when Campbell attempted a low drive as the opening 45 drew to a close.

After the second period opened with a couple of unproductive home attacks, Tweedmouth stayed in the game through Jamie Heath's 52nd minute assured finish on the back of Cummings' timely pass.

Roles were reversed following Glens' Reece Brown hitting the stanchion, Heath outstripping home men to feed Cummings. Shaw came out to narrow the angle and the eventual shot ran outside his post. Archie Roue had a go from outside the penalty area but was a couple of feet too high.

Glenrothes took control again and on 68 mins., Cargill whipped the ball into the net from the right to secure his hat trick. The hosts hit the post ahead of Walters' foot preventing a 76th minute Keane Whitlet goal. It wasn't the first time that the keeper's boot had stopped a shot but it was his hand which brought the loudest applause of the afternoon when he stretched to turn away Andy McCallion's bullet header for a corner.

Glenrothes' perseverance paid off with Fionn McLeod Kay making it 5-1 near the end.
