LET’S TALK JUNE -Hips.
PART 1
Why Hip Mobility Matters
As most of you lovely ladies will know from our classes, hip mobility is incredibly important. Whether you’re shaking your hips in Zumba like Shakira, strengthening them in Toning and Body Conditioning, or stretching them in Yoga, healthy hips play a huge role in how we move and feel every day.
The hip joint is where your thigh bone connects to your pelvis. It is the second-largest joint in your body, after your knees, and is designed to support your body weight while allowing a wide range of movement.
The hips are a ball-and-socket joint, made up of:
The femoral head – the rounded top of your thigh bone (femur), which forms the “ball.”
The acetabulum – a cup-shaped socket in the pelvis that holds the femoral head in place.
This amazing structure provides stability, strength, and flexibility, allowing us to walk, squat, bend, dance, and move with ease.
Because the hips bear the weight of the upper body, they can be prone to a number of common issues, including:
• Osteoarthritis – the gradual wearing down of joint cartilage, leading to pain and stiffness.
• Hip Labral Tears – damage to the ring of cartilage that helps stabilise the joint, often causing a catching or clicking sensation.
• Bursitis and Tendinitis – inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs (bursae) or tendons around the joint, resulting in discomfort and reduced mobility.
