With so much incredible sport happening around the world right now, the energy is absolutely buzzing! 🌍✨

It got us thinking about our own sporting roots here in town, so we’ve dug out an absolute gem of an old photograph showing a glimpse into Berkhamsted's past! Things looked a little different back then, but some of our favorite spots have stood the test of time. We want to see who knows their local geography best! πŸ€”

Can you guess:
1️⃣ Where exactly along the canal was this snapped? πŸ“
2️⃣ Which BSG Member Club calls that beautiful sports ground in the background home today? πŸ₯Žβš½πŸ

πŸ’‘ Cheeky Hint: If your local history is a bit rusty, paddle on over to our website! Have a look around our pages, you might find some clues to give you the winning answer. πŸ˜‰

Over the last week, you cast your memories of Broadwater into the comments and they were brilliant. Thank you.

So many connections... so many generations. All tied to one piece of ground. Here's the story behind it: Broadwater began as a cricket ground in 1875, built on soil dug from the Northchurch railway tunnel and first laid out as a cricket ground. Football followed. Then hockey, tennis, bowling and more… sport after sport taking root in the same place, the community growing up around all of it.

The land was nearly lost in 1921. The town bought it back. The football club collapsed in 2009. Volunteers rebuilt it. The nickname came from soldiers returning from the trenches in 1919. It never left. The Comrades. Over a hundred years. Still going. Louder than ever.

UPDATE: Let's solve this mystery! First off, a huge congratulations to our local history detectives!

This is indeed the Broadwater sports ground back in the mid-1920s.

We threw a little curveball into this challenge to see just how sharp your eyes are... and you didn't disappoint! For those who noticed that something looked a bit "off" with the barge pool off Lower Kings Road, you were entirely correct, it wasn't actually there! πŸ†
While bringing this faded old photo back to life, a little "creative section" was added to test our history buffs, and we wanted to see who would spot it.

ORYGINAL POST: Guess the Berko ground!

πŸ† With the Berkhamsted Sporting Excellence Awards coming up on Thursday 4th June, we are celebrating both our future stars and our historic roots.

Starting today, we're doing a special β€œThen & Now” Guessing Game. We’ll be posting archive photos of local sports grounds from 100 years ago.
β€’ Can you guess where they are?
β€’ Can you name the club that started at this ground, and who plays here now?

Drop a comment if you’re ready to test your local knowledge, and tag a teammate who thinks they know Berko history better than anyone else! πŸ‘‡

Answers will be revealed shortly.... let’s see how we know our pitches in town!
