Did you know our Tuesday lunchtime vinyasa flow (dynamic) yoga teacher, Katie, is a runner?
Here are some words from her and how yoga supports her running:
"I have been practising yoga on and off for most of my adult life, and I started running about six years ago. At first, I was interested in both for their physical benefits - yoga for flexibility, and running for fitness. But both ended up having a massive impact on my mental health and emotional well being - Iโm a happier person because of them! And I canโt imagine doing one without the other.
Iโm currently training for my sixth marathon in September, and yoga is as important in my plan as the miles on my feet and sessions in the gym. Running puts a lot of stress on your body, and yoga can help to ease stiffness and soreness. Working on strength and mobility can also help you run better, and so reduce the risk of getting injured.
"Runners have a bit of a reputation for skipping their stretches(!). Yoga makes it fun with the added benefit of bringing a bit of calm to your day (and maybe helping you sleep better!) Active recovery and rest are just as important as all the other aspects of training, as this is when your body repairs and adapts.
I would say my personal practice and classes are on the more โchilled outโ end of the vinyasa spectrum. Iโm flexible for a runner, but not especially for a yoga teacher. I prefer to focus on finding comfortable length in the muscles, and I might throw a bit of core and glute strength in too!
Are you a running or aspiring runner keen to support your running practice? Why not join Katie's Tuesday 12.30pm-1.15pm lunchtime yoga sessions with us in studio or online (and the huge range of other yoga classes we offer which can also support running).
