Is pushing your speed envelope in a race worth the power cost — or should you rein it in to finish stronger? New post by racestronger® shows the real cost of pushing your bike speed and whether it's the best decision for your run and race result. Who cares about FTP? I do — but not alone. FTP’s a useful number, sure. It gives you a steady-state benchmark. But if you race triathlon, surges, climbs and transitions change everything. I’ve seen top athletes spend 20–30% of a bike leg ABOVE FTP. That’s why I test and train 1‑, 5‑ and 20‑minute power plus Critical Power (CP).

Want pacing that actually saves your run? Build W′, boost your 1‑minute and 5‑minute outputs, and use CP to understand where fatigue really starts. The result: smoother bike legs, fewer costly spikes and a stronger run off the bike.

If you’re an experienced age‑grouper or podium contender, don’t let a single number limit you. Read the full breakdown on testing protocols, how CP relates to FTP, and practical sessions you can add to turbo and outdoor rides. Click through to get the complete guide and smarter ways to train.

Why FTP alone is no indicator of performance in Triathlon and bike racing. See what your focus should be

I’ve raced in the heat — and I’ve learned the hard way that the bike leg isn’t won by power alone. It’s won by smart fuelling. For a 72kg age-grouper, aim for 60–90g carbs/hour, sip 600–900ml/hr of electrolyte fluid in hot conditions, and take gels every 30–40 minutes with 150–250ml of fluid. Start sipping from the gun, practise your gut on training rides, and choose gels with added electrolytes when it’s hot.

Want a plan that fits your exact strengths across swim, bike and run? Racestronger’s custom plan builder helps you combine disciplines and ability levels so you don’t under- or over-train any area — perfect for experienced age-groupers chasing podiums. Tell us: what’s your go-to gel for race day? 👇

Completing the Ironman bike leg requires more than just physical strength and endurance. Your fuelling strategy can make or break your race, especially when the temperature rises. For a typical 72KG male AG athlete, managing carbohydrate intake, hydration, and electrolytes during the bike leg is cru...

I’ve raced, studied and coached around courses that break the field — Kona’s blistering heat, Lanzarote’s volcanic climbs, Lake Placid’s cold-water shock, Nelson Mandela Bay’s savage winds and Whistler’s Green Monster. Each course needs its own game plan.

Want a plan that actually matches those demands? At RaceStronger we build truly custom plans that let you mix discipline-specific focus and ability levels so you don’t overtrain one area while underpreparing another. That means smarter bike pacing for Lanzarote, heat-management fueling strategies for Kona, and cold-water swim prep for Lake Placid — all in one tailored plan delivered through TrainingPeaks.

If you’re an experienced age-grouper or podium chaser who treats preparation like performance, this is for you. Ready to train with intention? Tell me which course scares you most — I’ll explain how we’d approach it. 🔥💪🌊

Want faster bike splits without doing extra intervals? We’ve condensed 15 years of racing, wind-tunnel testing and coaching into one clear guide on ‘no‑training’ speed gains. Position beats parts: a tidy tuck, better saddle height and aero bars often save far more watts than the flashiest upgrades.

We cover the realistic hierarchy — from bike position and aero bars to helmets, suits, tyres and bottle placement — with practical cost notes and expected time savings at ~35 km/h. Small changes stack: a proper fit + smart kit choices can shave minutes off longer races.

Read the full breakdown and make your next upgrade count. What would you change first — position, wheels or helmet? Tell us below! 👇🚴‍♂️💨

We are often asked by athletes directly or via Facebook questions on whether it's worth investing in bike options to make the bike leg faster, nearly always asking about bike fit, and if there's a budget, what to buy first. Here is our answer, based on 15 years of racing and coaching multisport and....

We asked AI to compare the big players — and then we put Mike under the microscope. Result? If you’re a serious age-grouper chasing marginal gains, convenience won’t cut it. We build coach-designed, modular plans that let you bias one discipline (hello swim limiter) while keeping bike and run progression razor-sharp.

Why that matters: our world-first custom plan builder combines separate-discipline ability levels and training metrics into one plan so you don’t over- or under-train anything. The outcome: targeted improvements where they count — the difference between mid-pack and qualifying for Worlds.

Curious which system fits your profile? Read the full, unbiased breakdown and see Mike’s example — then decide if you want convenience, numbers, or precision. Let’s make you faster. Ready?

So you're wondering whether AI or racestronger is the better option for you to achieve world domination. See what AI thinks itself!

One word: DURABILITY. Want to know how the best keep race pace longer? Two numbers will tell you everything — Efficiency Factor (EF) and Aerobic Decoupling. EF shows how much pace or power you get for a given heart rate. Decoupling reveals cardiac drift — when heart rate climbs while output stalls. Track both on steady Zone‑2/low‑3 sessions (20+ mins) and you’ll spot real aerobic gains, pacing flaws and race‑day readiness. I use these metrics to tweak training, set realistic race targets and stop guessing what my body’s actually doing. Curious how they fit into a truly personalised plan? Read the full breakdown and examples — then try tracking EF + Decoupling on your next steady session. Let’s make your endurance resilience measurable. 🔥🏃‍♂️💪

If you're an endurance athlete, it's about maintaining your best pace come race day. If you're not monitoring these two numbers then you're missing a trick!

Is FTP the be-all and end-all for triathlon bike performance? Short answer: no. In our latest blog post we explain why FTP is a useful benchmark but not the whole story — triathlon rides involve surges, hills, transitions, and tactical efforts above and below threshold. Learn what metrics matter most for race-day success and how to train for them. Read more: https://wix.to/moN34ZN
