A message to all dads raising boys:
If you’re able, spend time with your lads.
From the day they’re born, play with them. Sit with them. Walk with them. Kick a ball around. Wrestle on the living room floor. Ride bikes together. Climb mountains together. Take them to see their favourite band. Sometimes, just do nothing together.
Make them want to be in your presence.
Because one day they’ll start pulling away. That’s part of growing up. They might become distant. They might even reject you for a while.
But if you’ve invested the time, the attention and the love, they’ll always know where home is. They’ll come back. Whether it is as they navigate the choppy waters into adulthood or when they are fully grown men.
Last weekend at the inter-club competition, I turned around during the warm-up and saw a line of dads holding pads for their boys and their team mates beside the ring.
It was a simple moment, but a powerful one.
A handful of fathers giving up their time to be involved in something their sons love. Sharing an experience. Creating memories. Building bonds that will last long after the competition is forgotten.
These moments are fleeting. They are precious.
Grab them. Hold them. Cherish them.
Because before long, we’ll be the ones asking our boys if they fancy kicking a ball around, going for a walk, or spending an afternoon together.
And every minute we invest now is worth it.
