The beauty of paddling on the island is that when the wind picks up, there is always somewhere you can go to escape it. This was paddock drive today at low tide, so still and calm!
If you find yourself in a windy spot though theres a few things you do that help you maintain control.
In a head wind you want to make sure your getting as low as possible to reduce your surface area, this massively reduces your wind resistance. So really focus on bending those legs and leaning a bit further forward than you usually would. The board will also run a lot less between strokes, so stay on the front of the stroke and increase your stroke rate too. This will help to keep moving the board forwards.
In a tail wind you want to almost do the opposite, stand up a bit straighter between strokes so you're a bit like a sail. Reduce the stroke rate too and really focus on trying to glide between each stroke
If the winds blowing from your offside then try and keep the paddle a bit further away from the board this will help the boat track a lot better so you dont have to switch hands as much.
If the wind is blowing on your paddle side then you want to try and catch the water at the front of your stroke a bit further away from the board and then quickly bring it as close and inline with the board as possible. This will help you keep the bow facing in your direction of travel.
