POWERLIFTING VS WEIGHTLIFTING 💪🏋️‍♂️

"What's the difference!?"

This is the most common question I get asked as a Strength Coach from non-competitive lifters and gym enthusiasts.

- Powerlifting is a strength sport that consists of the big 3 compound lifts, Back Squat, Bench Press and Deadlift. You will have seen this done by the majority of general gym goers, but when it comes to competition, each lift has their own set of rules and commands to adhere to.

- Weightlifting or Olympic Weightlifting is actually a power based sport (I know confusing right) that consists of two lifts The Sn**ch and the Clean and Jerk. Outside of the sport, these lifts are often seen used by Strength and Conditioning Coaches as a training modality for athletes and by Crossfitters as part of their workouts. You probably saw it on Eurosport once.

Powerlifting has a much lower barrier to entry and is highly accessible, hence its popularity, however don't let that fool you into thinking it is easy! In truth, the stronger you get, the harder it actually becomes, go figure!

Weightlifting is deemed the more technical sport of the two, which often leads to a higher dropout rate and fear of trying. However with appropriate coaching anyone can learn these lifts, it just takes a little longer to grasp the technical elements than more basic compound lifts, but it's a highly rewarding process!

To be great at either requires years of hard work, perseverance and sacrifice. My advice as always, if just casually training, do a bit of everything and see what you enjoy most. If you would like to compete in either, then find a Coach who knows how to take you there and can guide you along the way and of course remember to embrace the process, be open to learning and enjoy it!

10 YEARS IN THE GAME!!!! 🎉🏋️‍♂️

Did you know that come June my business will officially be 10, it's gotten so bad that people no longer recognise me as 'Chris' anymore they just call me 'Strength Coach!'

So after 10 years of building Strength Coach NI, I’m evolving the brand with the man, simply into Strength Coach™.

This isn’t a change in what I do by any means, it’s an expansion of what the brand is becoming.

Over the last decade I’ve moved further into coaching coaches, providing education, business consultancy and working with lifters and athletes beyond just one location.

Strength Coach™ represents that next step: same coaching, same standards, but a bigger platform built around performance, education, and long-term coach, athlete and business development, broken down into 3 subcategories:

A fully affiliated and well equipped Olympic Weightlifting Club in the heart of West Belfast (5 mins from the City Centre). A Club that caters to all, regardless of background or ability level.

The Club Sessions run 3 days a week Mon, Wed & Fri 6-7pm by our Head Coach Chris and you will get access to our Club Programme with your own exclusive profile on our training app.

NI POWERLIFTING NATIONALS 2026 🥇🥉💪

Excellent weekend for all Gain Forth Powerlifters, with three of my own lifters taking to the platform and putting up some incredible performances!

First up we had Jack, this was our first time working together and what a day he had, coming away with a 205kg Squat, 125kg bench press (We just have to calm down on the leg drive to stop that bum lifting) and a big 230kg deadlift pb to finish his day, actually all of which are Comp PB's and a 30kg increase on his previous total, securing fourth place in a packed out 93kg class! 💪

Then we had Sarah, having an especially great day on squats which are always her biggest mental block, hitting all three and coming away with 132.5kg, then a 65kg bench which meant all girls were tied coming into deadlifts, Sarah had just pulled 165kg meaning she had to go for 177.5kg for the win, she fought it, she pulled it, but unfortunately had a slight hitch towards the lockout so the referee's couldn't give it, rules are rules! But an incredible performance nonetheless and a proud bronze medal in the process!🥉💪

Then we had Emma, another Gain Forth Coach herself! We had some flare-ups with the knees coming into this comp so had to really keep an eye on squats. Nonetheless she went three for three hitting a nice 150kg then on the bench press she hit 70kg and then it was on to the deads, she finally once again broke that 180 mark coming away with a big 185kg pull to end the day and another incredible performance in the books and is now the NI National Champion in the F84kg Class!!! 🥇💪

All three athletes exceeded their expectations for this comp and as a Coach I couldn't be prouder of them, there is always something to work on after a comp, but that doesn't mean you can't be proud of what you achieved either, enjoy it, then get back to the drawing board for the next one!
