Self‑Inflicted Pain at GRHs

The game was barely 90 seconds old when debutant Padraig Robinson reacted to an unsavoury off‑the‑ball incident with a Newtowne midfielder. Only the referee and the two players involved seemed to know what happened, but Padraig’s retaliation in front of the official earned him a straight red and the earliest of showers.

Two minutes later, Celts winger Aaron Taci won a free kick on the edge of the box. The delivery wasn’t fully cleared, and the loose ball fell to Caolan Millen, who connected with a perfect volley to open the scoring. Newtowne struggled to settle as Celtic, angered and determined, pushed hard to extend their lead. The Bhoys played sharp football and threatened again before a breakaway equaliser that looked offside to everyone except the referee.

Both sides then went toe‑to‑toe. Stand‑in keeper Gerard McVeigh had plenty to deal with as Newtowne pumped balls into the box, trying to exploit the height mismatch. Despite injuring himself in the warm‑up, he started well, but an uncharacteristic error on 35 minutes gifted Newtowne their second.

Chasing the game before the break, Celtic were caught by a long ball over the top. O’Rourke’s recovery tackle looked perfectly timed to everyone but the referee, who pointed to the spot to the disbelief of both benches. The penalty was dispatched, giving Newtowne a 1–3 half‑time lead.

Celtic regrouped and began the second half brightly, but the extra man eventually told. Tired legs and tired minds led to familiar mistakes, gifting Newtowne a goal just after the hour mark and two more late on.

Between those setbacks came a deserved goal from Odhran Ferry, who was a constant thorn in Newtowne’s side and looks a real asset. He and midfielder Caolan Millen were standout performers, closely followed by winger Tiernan Floydd. Debutant Liam Bracken caused problems when introduced, and the return of Conor Mooreland was a welcome sight.

But this league is unforgiving, you can’t keep giving gifts to the opposition; they will be taken. Away to bitter rivals on Tuesday night, the games keep coming. The firepower is there; cutting out silly goals is the key to turning fortunes around.

Four games into the new season, we find ourselves navigating a difficult opening spell, shaped by tough fixtures, defensive growing pains, and the challenge of integrating a largely rebuilt squad. Yet within the frustration lies a clear sense of direction: this is a season of development, patience, and long‑term progress.

The campaign opened away to familiar opposition in the Irish Cup first round against Desertmartin. The Bhoys started brightly, with Paul Downey calmly finishing in the 39th minute to give us a deserved lead. Momentum shifted just before the break when the hosts levelled from the spot, and Desertmartin struck again on the hour. With the Celts pushing for an equaliser, a late counter made it 3–1 . A strong start undone by costly moments.

League action followed on Tuesday, ending in a narrow 2–1 defeat away to Wellington Rec. Downey again found the net, continuing his sharp early‑season form, but defensive lapses and missed chances proved decisive. A quick pivot to the Steel & Sons Cup saw us host Rosemount Rec, where familiar issues resurfaced. Defensive errors and injuries contributed to a 1–3 loss.

Back to league action on Tuesday night, we welcomed Desertmartin once more, only to find them in ruthless form. They capitalised on several defensive gifts, offering another reminder of the standards required at this level.

This campaign is, by design, a rebuild. Of the 18 players used so far, 13 are new to the club with many new to the league entirely. It has been a baptism of fire: intense fixtures, rapid adaptation, and little margin for error.

We host Newtowne tomorrow, one of the league’s early title favourites, unbeaten in their opening four games. It’s another stern test, but also another opportunity for growth, cohesion, and belief.

The start has been tough, but the future remains bright. With patience, hard work, and the squad settling week by week, we can turn the corner. This rebuild is about more than results, it’s about laying foundations for a stronger, more resilient club.

The 2026/27 season has arrived, and after a busy summer of recruitment at GRHs, we’re feeling ready to push for greater success. And nothing gets the blood pumping like a hectic August — seven games in twenty‑one days. It’s intense, it’s demanding, and it’s exactly the kind of challenge that sorts the men from the boys.

Returning Player
First up is Mikey “The Scouse” Durney.
Following his maiden season with the club, Mikey returns after making a real impression both at reserve and first-team level. Having joined from Ballyclare North End in search of a new challenge, he quickly found himself stepping up from Junior 3 football to Intermediate Division 1 and more than proved he belonged.
His energy, strength, skill on the ball and commitment in midfield made him a valuable asset throughout the season, earning the trust of the both management teams.
Darren and Gerry are delighted to welcome Mikey back to the reserves and have rewarded his leadership qualities by appointing him reserve club captain. With a number of exciting new additions strengthening the first team, Mikey will focus on leading the reserves this season while remaining ready to answer the call whenever needed.

The Heartbeat of the Club
Reserve teams rarely make the headlines, but they are the lifeblood of any football club, working tirelessly behind the scenes and always ready to step up when called upon.
Last season highlighted exactly why Belfast Celtic’s reserves are so important. With the majority of the first-team squad departing, it was the reserves who kept the club moving forward, fulfilling fixtures and maintaining our presence on the pitch until reinforcements arrived. They answered the call without hesitation, demonstrating the commitment, loyalty and pride that define Belfast Celtic Football Club.
Few players embody those values more than Gerard McLaughlin and Gerry Kelly.
At 48, McLaughlin remains a shining example of dedication and professionalism. Through hard work, discipline and passion for the game, he continues to defy expectations and inspire those around him.
Just two years younger, Kelly has given 25 years of service to the club. With more than 700 appearances and experience in virtually every position on the pitch, he has also played a key role off it, helping to oversee both football and operational matters for the past 18 years.
Together, alongside Reserve Team Manager Darren Greene, McLaughlin and Kelly are reunited with a shared vision: to build a strong, competitive reserve team that develops players for senior football while competing for honours in its own right.
Darren has been an integral part of the club for the past 3 years as both a player and manager. He has helped attract and develop many players, strengthening the team year on year, while continuing his own coaching journey through the NCC1 badge. His goal is to provide a clear pathway into senior football and help players returning from injury or a dip in form rediscover their confidence.
The reserves may not always be in the spotlight, but they are the foundation on which the club is built. Their resilience, commitment and love for the badge ensure that when Belfast Celtic needs them most, they are always ready to answer the call.
