One of the biggest effects pressure has on players is muscle tension.
Everyone experiences pressure differently, but a very common reaction is tightness in the body. Your shoulders creep up, your arms feel rigid, and your legs suddenly feel slow and heavy.
The first step is simply recognising that itโs happening.
For example:
You're just about to step up to serve, and suddenly your arms feel as heavy as a bag of bricks!
โข If your shoulders feel tight, tense them for a few seconds, relax them, then give them a quick shake.
โข If your legs feel heavy or sluggish, before you play the point, try skipping from foot to foot, or jumping on the spot to wake them up (just remember to leave the skipping rope at home though ๐).
Small resets like this can make a huge difference during a match.
And remember, like anything, the more you practise this, the easier it will become.
