An EGM was held in March, at which I stepped down as captain of the Lady Victoria Boat Club. I had been in post for more than four years, spanning the pandemic period and seeing in a new era of professional rowing coaching at the student clubs. The time has now come for a new leader, with new vigour and new ideas.
The position of captain is currently vacant, there having been no-one proposed at the EGM.
I would encourage you to think carefully, and seriously about this - if you do not think the captaincy is for you, it could be that you know who might fit the role very well. Further committee roles are also available. Please get in touch, either way. When we have at least one nomination for captain, we will set a new EGM date, later this month or in June.
The committee typically meets every 5-6 weeks, alternating online with in-person as it suits those attending. Meetings last no longer than an hour. The main work takes place in between, of course, in various forms. I would be delighted to expand more on this, if you would like further information, just get in touch.
Since November 2022 I have been serving as a non-executive director on the board of Rowing Ireland, in the position of Northern Ireland director, and wish to concentrate on this role and others away from rowing. As for the Lady Victoria captaincy, I am grateful to all those who have supported me, in particular our President Ricky Caruth, Patron Andy Wells, and all those who have served with me on committee, particularly Gavin Meek and Mark McMullan who continue in their roles as treasurer and secretary. I’m also always grateful for new members: the newest being James Foley, who joined at the recent Winter Dinner.
This is an important point in the story of the Lady Victoria Boat Club: we need carry a clear, strong identity into the future. We are blessed with a continuous stream of new members: every rowing graduate of Queen’s should add to our number. A Queen’s rower may have a time-bound academic career, but – once a Queen’s rower, always a Queen’s rower – together as alumni we can make Lady Victoria a force to be reckoned with in the years and decades to come.
Will you help lead us on that journey?
