It's friday so time for some to get you through the day before the weekend. The 2 mens doubles on court are among the best in the world so we'll point out a few things to look out for when you watch the clip but Zhang Nan is definitely the MVP among them.
1) Change of pace and net shots are equally important as fast powerful smashes. Notice how most of the time when one pair plays a net shot/change of pace, they gain a better attacking advantage.
2) Positioning is crucial when defending. When someone lifts the shuttle to the middle of the back line, the defending pair's base position should be equidistant to each other. However, as seen in the clip, when someone lifts to the corner (left for example), the defending pair move their base position slightly to the left. This is because it reduces the area needed to be covered by a straight smash which travels faster to the left player and most of the time, opponents rarely hit a cross smash which travels slower and can be covered by the right player.
3) When attacking, your partner should stand in front of you with his racquet up. When you see any of the pairs attacking, it seems like their partner is tied to them by an imaginary string and they both move left or right simultaneously. The front player has to move where the shuttle is being lifted to and keep his racquet up so that if there is a weak smash return, he can intercept/attack or play a soft net shot to set up his partner's next smash. This is the so called "channel/tunnel attack".
That's it for now. Watch the clip and let us know in the comments below what you think or if have anything you want to share with everyone.
Till then, have a great weekend and see yous next Tuesday😁
