Hadrian League Finale
A gallery of Bedlingtonshire and Slaley Hall members enjoyed the 'spectacle' of the solar eclipse and the final moments of the 2026 Hadrian League campaign last night. Excuse the pun, but the Hadrian League finale by far outshone the eclipse!!
No-one expected the conclusion of the Golf to be so dramatic, nor so dark!! On the night we required 7 points from the 12 to lift the title, a tough ask against Slaley Hall who have been incredibly solid all season, hence their position at the top of the table!
Early in the evening the first games concluded with Slaley taking the first match and two points, with Angus Buchanan beating Fin Bell. Gary Potter put the first Bedlingtonshire points on the board, with a solid round of Golf and match that ended on the 15th green, Gary winning 4 & 3.
As Gary supported the other players, coming out of the park Jack Baird was one up and Mark Mollon one down. Mark Mollon won the last three holes, with up and downs on 16 and 17, both with well placed 8 iron bump and runs!! His match finishing on the 18th hole, winning two up. Captain Jack closed his game out on the 17th green, wining 2&1, which gave us 6 points, requiring only one further point to win the league!!
As Jack and Mark Mollon came back to see how the players behind were doing, Adam Mavin was on the 15th hole, Simon Brown behind on the 15th tee. An unlucky break on the 15th for Adam left him on the left side of the hole under the canopy of the trees, as he led his match one up. A loss of the hole forced the game to all square through 15 holes. Adams match would come to a close on the 17th green, with a solid performance by his opponent Brandon, who managed to get the better of Adam for the first time of the round.
Simon was 1 down thru 15, then halved 16 following both players hitting the front of the green in two shots and three putting, moving to the 17th tee with the same score line. All of the spectators gathered around the green, at this point with bats above head as they circled the tree line at dusk! Both players missed the green with their tee shots and struggled to make up and down from out of position. Simon had a 8 foot putt for bogey to extend the match to the 18th, which he holed with confidence. This was a fantastic moment and gave the Bedlingtonshire players hope as both players proceeded to the 18th tee, in the dark.
Slaley Hall would go on to win the final match, with both players trying their best down 18 to navigate the hole as best they could (see photo below). An incredibly dramatic and unlucky night, with Slaley taking the league victory by the narrowest of margins, with a 6-6 draw on the night, and a points tally of 119 for Slaley and 118 for Bedlingtonshire. See the final league table below.
Congratulations to our Captain Jack Baird and all of the players who have had a fantastic season and for contributing to one of the most tense final matches ever! And congratulations of course to Slaley Hall on their title!
Thanks to all of our members and Past Captains for coming and supporting the team last night. It was really good to see you all there, we have no doubt you had a great night.
