Good Night In Our Beginners Sparring Sessions

Although it's a beginners class they benefit from the experience of the tenured athletes who's travelled the world doing this sport and now give back to the next generation

Reminder to all students we welcome you to spar as soon as YOU want you don't need to wait to be ready!

Sparring is a viral part of our curriculum and you need to be doing it by the 6 months mark so may as well get in straight away.

Why "Winning" in Class Means Losing in Competition

If you are one of the top performers in the gym and you spend your entire sparring session "winning,"

you’re actually doing it wrong.

In the dojo, there are no trophies. No one cares about your gym record.

Imagine your best weapon is a killer lead leg kick. If you rely on that to dominate every round in training, you might feel like a boss. But what happens when you step into the ring or onto the mats against an opponent who knows exactly how to shut that lead leg down? If that's all you've got, you're done.

Shift Your Focus

True martial artists use sparring to build a complete game, not to protect their egos. A massive portion of your training mat-time should be dedicated to making your weaknesses your strengths.

Next time you lace up the gloves or step onto the mat, try this:

**Put away your best weapon:**
Intentionally limit yourself to force creativity.

**Work your weaknesses:**
If you're a kicker, focus entirely on your hands, timing, and head movement.

**Change the perspective:**
Spend whole rounds in your opposite stance.

**Play defense:**
Put yourself in bad positions on purpose and work your escapes and counters.

Build Your Toolbox

Sparring is a laboratory, not a stadium. Use it to build a massive tactical toolbox. That way, when a real fight or tournament match isn't going your way, you don't panic—you just switch up the game plan.

Stop trying to win the practice, and start training to win the fight.

That realization when you've won your first competition 💚

Know what sucks about our sport ?
- Early Mornings
- Long Drives
- Stuffy Sport Halls
- Expensive Days

Long trips across the country self funded for sometimes a straight final that last 3 minutes

But know what doesn't suck ?

What our sport gives kids ! I was never sporty not into football, rugby, athletics etc but martial arts offers something for everyone

The "fat kid" ....POWERFUL
The "Skinny Kid" ....FAST
The "Nerdy Kid" .... ANALYTICAL

Moments like this video show why the expensive long days are worth it ! Empowering a child with so much confidence in the face of adversity (even in controlled competition the same chemicals are released as a street fight)

A child starting to believe in themselves

Parents proud of their kids just for stepping onto the mats

A respect made between 2 strangers

So much we don't see when all we see is an expensive long day

Before long these days will be gone, the sat by the mats entertaining each other, the car rides, the stories ...replaced with the mundane 9-5

So yes you lost your Sunday but if you look..you gained so much more

As parents we all want our kids to succeed and be the best they can be. But let me tell you something...

Constantly telling them what they aren't doing right can actually be counterproductive when it comes to helping them improve.

When students first start martial arts they don't know how to throw a punch. Over time they learn through repetition. They build confidence. They get proficient. They get good at combos on the pads.

Then they try sparring...

And suddenly it can look like they've forgotten everything.

But they haven't.

Their brain is trying to process distance, movement, timing, defending, attacks, nerves, pressure and someone hitting back for the first time. There's a lot going on up there.

So how do they get better?

Not by hearing:

"Why didn't you do this?"
"You should have done that."
"You need to be more aggressive."
"You need to throw more kicks."

They get better through practice. Through experience. Through repetition.

They get in. They spar. They make mistakes. They gain experience. They relax over time.

Then what they've learned starts to come to the surface.

Then the magic happens...

Learn → Adapt → Evolve

They take the drills they've learned and adapt them into their own style. Their own timing. Their own combinations. Their own game.

And all of that comes from time and reps.

Then guess what...

That whole cycle starts again when they do their first competition 😅

So as a parent just tell them:

"You're doing great."
"Go have fun."
"I'm proud of you."

Let them figure things out through experience.

The coaches will guide and correct along the way.
..I mean, you could always kit up and give it a go too... show them how it's done 😉
