3 ball is by far the most popular (and complex) game we play during our before school dodgeball club.
It’s perfect for a large group of key stage 2 children testing their accuracy, awareness, speed, coordination, skill and response.
Equipment
3 dodgeballs
Indoor or outdoor court with clear boundary lines
Basket ball or netball hoops
Rules and Structure
All children start on the outside of the court
3 dodgeballs placed in the middle
Coach blows whistle and game begins with children entering the court and trying to get to the dodgeballs first
If a player has a ball they are not allowed to move whilst holding it
Whilst still in the game players can get each other out with a direct hit from the shoulder down, catching a ball thrown by a player in the game or by stepping outside the court
Once a player is out they are allowed to move anywhere around the outside of the court and grab balls that come out of court
If they get hold of a ball they can try and hit someone who’s still in play, if they hit them they swap places and get back into the game
They can also take a shot at scoring a basket. If this happens everyone that is out comes back into play
Players who are out can also tag players that are in if they come within their reach and swap with them to come back on to the court.
The game continues until there is one player left. This can sometimes be a very quick process, but usually tends to be a long game with lots of changes and surprises.
It isn’t over until it’s over!
