In a previous life…

The other day, I got chatting to a few people in class about what I did before becoming a yoga and Pilates teacher.

Then, while packing up the house, I came across this box.

For around 12 years, I worked in TV and event production — mostly music festivals and live events, and later documentaries. I met some amazing people, forged treasured friendships and had experiences that were wild, wonderful… and occasionally incredibly stressful!

Now, in my attempt to live with less, I'm faced with whether it's finally time to let these go.

There are so many memories in this box. Different versions of me. Different people, places and adventures. Moments of pure excitement — and moments when I probably cried in a portaloo. (I definitely cried in a portaloo.)

But ultimately, they're bits of card and plastic.
The memories aren't in the lanyards. They're in me.

A house move feels like a good opportunity to practise a little aparigraha — appreciating what something represented without needing to keep it forever.

Although knowing that and actually putting them in the bin appear to be two entirely different things… 😂

How easy do you find it to let go of things that carry emotional weight?

In a previous life…

The other day, I got chatting to a few people in class about what I used to do before I became a yoga and Pilates teacher.

Then, in the midst of packing up the house, I came across this box.

For around 12 years, I worked in TV and event production — mostly music festivals and live events, and later in documentaries.

I was incredibly fortunate. I met some amazing people, was given some awesome opportunities, forged many treasured friendships and had experiences that were wild, wonderful... And occasionally incredibly stressful!

Finding all these old passes has presented me with a little dilemma, however.

In my ongoing attempt to live with less, I've become slightly fascinated by the Scandinavian idea of death cleaning!

The idea is to gradually clear out the things you've accumulated over a lifetime, rather than leaving somebody else to deal with it all when you're gone.
I don't have children. And I wouldn't want my niece to have to wade through all my old crap. So I'm trying to make a start now.

And yet… these are difficult to throw away.

There are so many memories in this box. Different versions of me. Different places, people, adventures, ridiculous hours, moments of pure excitement, and moments when I probably wanted to cry in a portaloo. (And very likely did cry in a portaloo!)

But ultimately, they're just bits of card and plastic.
The memories aren't in the lanyards. They're in me.

A house move feels like a good opportunity to practise letting go — and perhaps a little aparigraha, the yogic principle of non-grasping. Appreciating what something represented without necessarily needing to keep the object forever.

Still, knowing that and actually putting them in the bin appear to be two entirely different spiritual practices...

How easy do you find it to let go of things that carry emotional weight? Do you keep the mementos, or are you good at letting them go?

Are you ready to return to your routine this September?

Holidays, days out, looking after kids/grandkids, late nights and weekends away... The busy, social summer months bring a lot of fun, but they can also knock us right out of our routine.

September always brings a sense of returning to a steadier rhythm. Whether you look after children (or go to school yourself!), it’s a great time of year to re-establish healthy habits and prioritise your wellbeing.

If yoga or Pilates has slipped from your shedule recently, my regular classes in Bedale, Snape and Masham are here to support you.

Get in touch if you'd like to know more. Hope to see you in class! [email protected]

✨ Boost Your Confidence this Summer with a Regular Pilates Practice! ✨

Looking for a friendly, welcoming Pilates class in the Bedale or Masham area?

My mixed-ability Pilates classes are designed to help you build strength, improve posture, increase mobility and feel more comfortable in your body — whether you're completely new to Pilates or have been practising for years.

As we move into summer, Pilates can be a wonderful way to:

☀️ Improve core strength and stability
☀️ Support healthy joints and better posture
☀️ Reduce aches and stiffness
☀️ Increase energy levels
☀️ Feel stronger and more confident in everyday life
☀️ Burn off stress hormones
☀️ Take a little time for yourself!

Classes are relaxed, supportive and suitable for a range of abilities, with options offered throughout.

All sizes, shapes, genders, ages and levels of experience welcome. If you have a relatively decent baseline level of fitness, (as in, you don't get out of breath as soon as you start to move,) and can get up and down off the floor OK, there's something for you in my classes 🙌

📍 Bedale Methodist Church | Mondays | 6:00–7:00pm

📍 Masham Town Hall | Thursdays | 9:15–10:15am

If you'd like to move with greater confidence and ease this summer, get in touch!

I was away from classes for a few days last week, laying low with a virus. It was a good opportunity to practise what I so often encourage others to do: rest! (You may or may not know, I find resting rather challenging...!)

Whenever I'm feeling depleted or under the weather, I find myself returning to a few trusted practices: yoga nidra, restorative yoga, and Qi Gong.

The style of yoga I originally trained in, Dru Yoga, includes many Qi Gong influences, and that's what first led me to explore it further.

I love the flowing, repetitive, breath-led movements. It really allows you to drop into the present moment. It's a wonderful practice for shifting both energy and state of mind, in a way that feels nourishing rather than demanding.

There's a brilliant Qi Gong teacher in Leeds called Barney Bardsley. If you ever have the opportunity to practise with her, please do!

I also regularly use Qi Gong for Vitality, as pictured here on my laptop. The website was created by Jeffrey Chand, a Qi Gong teacher and acupuncturist based in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. His videos are filmed against the backdrop of the stunning British Columbian landscape, and they're every bit as beautiful as the practices themselves:

If you've enjoyed my restorative classes, I highly recommend exploring Qi Gong for yourself. It pairs beautifully with a regular yoga practice and offers another gentle way to cultivate balance, vitality and ease.

I''m happy to be back to teaching this week and classes will be running as usual. Restorative Week in all yoga classes begins on Thursday.

June Yoga Theme: Creating Space

How often do we rush from one thing to the next, leaving little room to really experience what's happening in the moment?

And does this habit creep into your yoga practice? (It certainly does in mine!)

This month, we'll be exploring the theme of space, using Triangle and Rotated Triangle as our guides.

Together we'll investigate how creating stability can lead to greater freedom, how grounding can support expansion, and how a little more space in the body can often create a little more space in the mind.

As always, plenty of modifications will be offered, including the use of chairs and blocks. Every individual body will do their own individual version of the pose - the photos attached are just a guide.

Join me this June as we slow down, breathe deeply and create a little more room for ourselves, in body, mind and heart 🩵
