We know why. We know how often and now we know what to lift.
However, what do these different terms mean regarding reps ranges and how to repeat?

There are different ways we can load up.

A familiar and very effective way is 8-12 reps, three times round, but why 3 times?

What about Supersets, Pyramid sets, Circuit training?

There are different ways to load the exercises. Same exercises but different ways to style it out to create variety and challenge and keep the brain active as well as the body.

Head to today’s blog where I discuss this in more detail and explain the differences. 💕

If you fancy joining the October British Heart Foundation Strong Woman Challenge, you will be well prepped.

Ok. So you know WHY and you know HOW OFTEN but you’re still unsure about HOW HEAVY?

It can be confusing and walking into a gym can be enormously scary. For starters, if you join me online, we are lifting 2-3 times a week and you can join from the privacy and safety of your own home with me on speeddial BUT wherever you are, let’s help you feel more confident about what you’re lifting.

In my blog today, I break it down and simplify the mystery around it. Keep it simple. Why complicate?

If you are totally new to weights or just need some reassurance about what you’re already doing, I explain what to expect and how to safely challenge yourself and progress.

Find the link in my bio to my weekly blog and I hope if I can help you feel more confident about your weight training workouts.

Next week, I’ll be discussing the different class structures, like single sets, supersets and more. We like to mix it up for variety so alternatively, just join me online and I’ll do all the thinking for you!

IMHO

Can be scary to put your opinions out there but I get asked this quite a lot.

I love to see a class where everyone just KNOWS where/how/when to adapt.

I’ve done DECADES of attending teacher training, lying on mats next to exceptionally experienced teachers (and I’d like to think after more than 20 years of teaching plus several years as a teacher trainer and committed to regular upskilling training, I’m advanced!!) but are we all mirror images of eachother? Of course not.

My 58 year old body reminds me regularly about the results of a lifetime of doing sport and exercise. Any teachers reading this might agree with me that we all get a bit broken from time to time. You look at a class of experienced teachers on the mat and there will be a lot of variety around how we work. Actually, it can be quite funny.

What I consider advanced is understanding the method. Knowing how to adapt, modify and work at the level that will offer progression without compensation.

Online, we go over and over the fundamentals and when I throw in a more advanced class, all that practise comes into play as we have the confidence to make the changes required.

As I say, just my opinion but don’t be put off by the label of the class. I’ve seen a lot of “advanced” classes with not a lot of Pilates taking place 😉😉

September reset.

It’s all about the Fundamentals and that means there’s nowhere to hide.

We are slowing it down, stripping it back, seeking perfection in every move by understanding appropriate adaptation and modification.

No cheating, no compensating. Every. Single. Movement. Counts and that’s why it’s SO hard!

If it’s easy, it very probably isn’t Pilates.
There is nowhere to hide ….

The Autumn Series starts right HERE!

Someone (who is very experienced on mat and reformer) said this morning “if someone had been watching that, they’d think “is that it?” but I can’t believe how hard I worked”!

The thing is with staying in Fundamentals land, there really is nowhere to hide. Moving more slowly with control and precision and not allowing for compensation.
What do I mean by compensation? Well, it could be momentum or speed, or not fully completing the move or letting a stronger area take over.
There are many ways to compensate and typically compensation leads to injury.

Listen, I LOVE workouts that make my muscles feel like they’re on fire, leave me gasping for breath with sweat dripping off my chin but it’s my dedication to Pilates that allows me to continue to do those things.

Whether you practise because you love Pilates or you practise because you love what Pilates does for you really doesn’t matter. What does matter is that you fully understand and master the basics because if you’re not getting it spot on at fundamentals level, how the heck can you possibly expect to be getting it right at a more advanced level?

Believe me, you may well be kidding yourself as you use power/speed/large range to help you bypass the nitty gritty that’s truly holding you back.

Yes it can be tedious. Yes it takes a huge amount of discipline and patience but if you want to progress, you need to go back!! The lightbulb moment when it just happens is the best!

Don’t accept injury or restrictions as a fact of ageing. Look at what’s not working and what’s working too hard. Look at alignment and move with precision and control and there’s NOTHING that helps understand movement better than the fundamentals of Pilates.

If you won’t do it for me, do it for Dolly 💕

(Unlike me, you don’t need to spend your life wearing navy - must go shopping!).

Sometimes in order to move forwards, we need to go back.

Coming up this September..

There is so much to Pilates and sometimes the best way to progress is to return to the fundamentals.

If you are new to Pilates, unsure whether it is for you or simply want to understand it more deeply, September is the perfect time to join us.

Pilates isn’t about fighting the movement, chasing the burn or completing endless repetitions.

It teaches you to:
• move with precision and control
• improve mobility and body awareness
• develop focus and concentration
• breathe more effectively
• move with purpose

You don’t have to love Pilates to benefit from it. What you learn on the mat supports everything else you do in
Life.

As much as we LOVE Pilates, research continues to reinforce the importance of strength training—particularly as we get older and we have that covered too.

LIFTING WEIGHTS IS RECOGNISED AS THE NEW ANTI AGEING TOOL!

(Pssst - incase you’re wondering, I worked as a personal trainer way before I ever found Pilates and continue to study, learn and research so I’m qualified to teach you to lift weights!)

In addition to a busy Pilates schedule, we also have 2 x weekly live weights classes.

PILATES + WEIGHTS: TWO DISCIPLINES. ONE STRONGER BODY FOR LIFE.

COULD TWO CLASSES A WEEK CHANGE HOW YOU FEEL?

Our live classes are only 45 minutes. Two classes take just 90 minutes of your entire week—but consistent practice can make a real difference. Squeeze in another 15 - 30 mins class from the “Snack Bar” collection in the library and you will really tick the box.

Can’t attend live? Choose from our extensive on-demand library and exercise whenever it suits you.

Join us for September. Start a new habit. Discover what a stronger, more capable body can do.

“In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 sessions you will see the difference and in 30 sessions you will have a completely new body”.
Joe Pilates.
WHATEVER EXERCISE YOU CHOOSE, this is FACT!

Lift some weights. Get on your mat and practise Pilates. Walk. Cycle. Stretch and mobilise.

If you’ve overdone the bbq’s and Rosè over the summer break, who cares? Did you have fun? As long as you did, great!

Now it’s time to embrace some discipline. Look at your diary. Maybe set the alarm 30 mins earlier. Maybe you can squeeze in a lunchtime sesh… could you grab 30 mins before dinner?

It doesn’t need to be in the gym. It doesn’t need to be a whole hour BUT it needs to start soon!

Start next week, grit your teeth through the first “I really don’t want to do this” sessions and very quickly find yourself slipping into a routine as it becomes part of your life.

Embrace your fabulous body. Even if it had a little neglect, it will forgive you and start working harder as you ask for more.

I won’t mention the C word yet, but we have plenty of time to build new habits, get stronger, fitter and even more fabulous before the clocks change.

Join us online. 7 live weekly classes ➕A huge library on demand.
Pilates. Reformer on the mat. Pilates with small equipment. Weight training. Functional strength. Stretch and mobilise

We LOVE Pilates AND we lift weights.

PLUS FOR THE WHOLE OF SEPTEMBER I will be up at the screen, watching you very closely as we take it all back to basics, revisiting and perfecting the fundamentals. Every class!

Im ready. You ready?

If you won’t do it for me, do it for Abba. I LOVE this remix ❤️

Seated strength.

We often bring our weights to a seated option.

Just a change, a chance to look at the move differently…yes it offers support if you’re not as confident but it can be used also for feedback and additional challenge.

It’s all about variety, or it is in our classes! We like to mix it up.
Make sure your chair is not going to slide on the floor, pick up some weights and have a go. Work slowly, with precision and when seated, keep that spine long 😉
