On Sunday 22nd June I took part in the Blast Running inaugral Race the Tram event in Edinburgh. I had been on the hunt for a running event that was a little different and this certainly fit the criteria. The plan, over 100 runners fill the tram at Edinburgh Park Central and ride it to their chosen stop, St Andrews Square or Newhaven. The goal, race back to Edinburgh Park Central using any route and beat the tram!
After a quick briefing from the race organsiers the runners all lined up ready to board the tram. There was plenty of excitement in the air and also the sense that this event would be a unique experience. Seasoned runners were thrown off their usual race day routine, the usual jog to warm up wouldn’t quite work whilst on the tram! What would be the best route, was it best to rely on a paper map, technology, or local knowledge?
The energy on the tram as we travelled to our chosen stops was fantastic and encapsulated many of the things I love about running, meeting new people and the sense of anticipation of the challenge ahead. I had chosen to get off at Newhaven which meant getting to watch the St Andrews Square runners disembark the tram and start their race, all heading in completely different directions!
A few stops later we arrived at the terminus in Newhaven, with only around 50 minutes and around 12km to cover to get back to Edinburgh Park before the tram. The doors opened and everyone sprinted off the tram and on to the Ferry Road path. For the next few minutes, it felt like a normal race again with everyone following the same initial route and settling into the pace. Soon enough though the first navigation decision arrived with some runners continuing East and others heading South.
Having never done a running event that involved navigation before I hadn’t appreciated quite how hard it would be to stay on route whilst trying to run fast. After a few wrong turns and re-routes the finish line was not too far away but time felt like it was running out. Sure enough with about 2km left I spotted the Tram speeding off into the distance. I did not beat the tram this year but nevertheless got to the finish with a big smile and having loved the event. Thanks to Blast Running for organising a brilliant race !
Spectators at the finish line commented on how runners had appeared from all different directions. There are many routes to reach your goal and you must choose the path that’s right for you.
