Thanks to Steve for this post about the GWR Mixed Doubles

The GWR Mixed Doubles took place at Royal Wootton Bassett PC on Sunday 21st June.

There were teams from: Grand Cru PC, RWBPC, Cricklade Saxons PC, Cricklade CC PC, Gotherington PC, Mere Mortals PC and the CoBPC who entered 5 of the 15 teams who entered the competition.

Following the morning group matches the rankings for the afternoons play were as follows: Dom and June topped the overall rankings at No1 and
Pete and Jules in 7th which meant both teams played in the gold competition. Wade and Flavia, Ann C and Gary H and Steve C and Pam McK played in the silver competition.

The afternoon session was knock out, and unfortunately the first game after lunch claimed claimed three of our teams, our two gold and one silver teams. Our last two teams in the silver competition made it through to the final. It was a bit of a one sided game, Ann C and Gary beating Pam McK and Steve C 13-1.

It was a long day played in very warm weather. Hats off to all the players, especially the CoBPC players who took part in the competition and a big thanks to the CoBPC competitors who sat in the shade with their ice cold drinks supporting the Silver and Gold finals.

French Boules by Terry

Few would argue this traditional tranquil game belongs to France; where it is and will remain, a village gathering – where parents take their children to play very early in their lives.

Then grandparents compete against their sons and daughters plus any grandchildren. These ingredients make for a much happy happy life.

Little has changed; the French still take two hours for lunch and greet our CoBPC teams with Enchante!

Our Bath City Pétanque club is a regional boules club; yet doth travel right across Europe and our glorious Channel Islands, gathering friends and bringing a greater understanding of a simple village game, that is enjoyed across many of UK's sporty pleasures.

Words fall into Rhyme by Terry

At this wonderful time of the year. When after our Saturday match today, players drift towards our tea urn and chocolate biscuit, on our bargain coffee table.

The practice game over; folks gather around the picnic tables and words are spoken that breaches all pretension's, smothering the - who won what and by how many.

Better exchanging; how is life treating you and you my friends ?

Today I spoke to a man who arrived to see If he wanted to join our band of sisters and brothers his name is Paul.

Around our club outdoor chats, in my opinion, sets the scene of life close to our doorsteps.

People who need people?

We all need social connections and Pétanque provides all the fun after a session playing with three metal boules and that powerful, delightful, little Jack.

Who in the name of good sense would put up a table and a club banner on a busy Saturday morning, outside Larkhall’s popular butchers and call out; “Stop Me” and ask what’s this social game all about!

Those few Bravehearts, the likes of who commit fully, to promoting Pétanque up the hill in the Larks enterprising football club. Towards those young men who first kicked a local ball way back in 1914.

I have been honoured to have made their acquaintance during my Boule years.

Don the first chairman of City of Bath Pétanque Club and Clive still stand out as the originals who promoted a friendship that has gathered strength, producing a bond of gatherers gaining exercise - friendships and social cohesion, far and wide beyond our region even into Europe

Worth a mention for those who have joined our great Pétanque ‘Big Family’ recently.

Oh! The devil has not got my Tongue by Terry

So I am free to recall our game last night at the Northey Arms

To be honest this Thursday League match was played in the shadows of Box Tunnel. A shady most awkward piste that favours the home side. I think Mike and Graham got a shock that we even won just one game.

Given the results I have few words you might expect to recall. The last orders bell rang time to pack up your boules and sit together and drink a friendly Pint.

Over a cool evening drink many, ‘do you remember when’s, were exchanged’ .

This in essence is the spirit of our CoBPC Thursday League.

A few did not like the new rules of Timed Games – then again dead strings helped a longer beer ending in cheerful engagement .

Nothing comes for Nothing by Terry.

Nothing ever should! – Take our club picnic tables
as an example.

All hands-on deck when they arrived – rolled up help from our landlords and members to assemble them. Larkhall Tommy and his band of merry men took all day to get them standing up like a new born calf on shaky legs.

Together we concurred that days challenge in 2016.

Again what a club we have where everyone pitched in to make something happen.

A Club song sung when Appropriate? By Terry

Should we be known as a club who Sings a Haka like; to express our celebration over our opponents or just a club song known and sung by all members?

Some of our members will recall, we used to have a CoBPC song.

Don would gather us all together on tour and sing the club song which all members were obliged to learn!

I remember it – if challenged I would sing it at the next club party.
First line begins “ On The”
