WELL DONE LAURA
This evening Laura Butler was playing for a place in the Northern Area Final of the Four Wood Singles. Up against Jo Neenan of Farnborough, who had, in the previous round, defeated 5 times County champion Margaret Holden, it was expected to be a tough game and so it proved. Laura, however, came out on top 21-12 and will now meet Sharon Dunt of Fleet United in the Area Final.

Commiseration to Diane, Val, Angie and Janie who this evening at Cove lost by just one shot to Alton Social in the quarter final of the Senior Fours It was always going to be a tough task against the 2024 National Champions and semi finalists in the recent World Bowls event but it was so close and you can be proud of yourselves.
It was also disappointing for Steve, Sean and Martin who at Cove in the County Triples came back from a big deficit only to be beaten over the last three ends

DRAWN TRIPLES DECIDED ON LAST END
Oakley's Drawn Triples Day is always enjoyable and this year was no exception. The eleven teams played in two leagues and with each team guaranteed four matches, it was the triples skipped by Richard Startin and Keith Turnbull that came through to contest the Final. In an exciting and high quality match, thoroughly enjoyed by the spectators, the team of Sally Day, Hugh Aherne and Keith took an early lead but, as the last end commenced that lead was down to just one shot and a score of two was sufficient to allow Wendy Aherne, Colin Godfrey and Richard to lift the title.
Thanks go to all who supported the day and to those who organised it.

TENSE NIGHT AT OAKLEY
This evening Oakley took on Whitchurch in their first match of this season's Hants and Berks Cup. Early stages were close and after 5 ends the teams were tied at 11-11. Oakley's rink skipped by Sean Lassman was struggling and at 13 ends they trailed by 8 shots although they were more than covered by the other two rinks as Oakley moved into a 16 shot lead. Lassman's rink was the first to finish clawing their way back to a 4 shot deficit but any thoughts of a comfortable victory were dashed by a late rally from Whitchurch that saw them close the gap so that Oakley eventually triumphed by just 7 shots. Oakley scores: J McRae, P Hammond, S Devonish and M Vickers won 22-15; H Aherne, R Denny, R Newson and G Tompkins won 16-12; J Fewtrell, J Dixon, S Kerley and S Lassman lost 16-12
If this game was close and exciting it did not compare with the County Triples match between the Ladies of Oakley and Alton Social, with both teams looking for a place in the Northern Area Final. With all the other matches finished it looked to a captive and excited audience as if Social had won the match as with the game tied at 16 ends they picked up three shots on the 17th end. The final end saw Oakley's skip, Laura Butler with her last bowl trail the jack to give Oakley a surprise 17-16 win. Well done Angie Rowe, Sandra Lee and Laura Butler and good luck in the Area Final.

LATE SURGE SEES OAKLEY HOME

Tonight's County Club Championship game against Pyestock was close. After 6 ends Oakley led 15-7 but by 12 ends Pyestock had fought back to reduce the deficit to just 3 shots and when, on the 13th end, scores of 1 and 6 saw Pyestock move into a 25-22 lead it was looking ominous for Oakley. The last ends, however, went Oakley's way and they emerged 38-26 winners.
Oakley scores: Carol Phillips; Lesley Dumalow; Angie Rowe and Laura Butler won 20-7: Christine Williams; Jo Holland; Mary Varndell and Val Ryan lost 18-19.

Congratulations to Janie Vickers who, today, at Alton BC, came through a strong field, containing half of Hampshire's Johns Trophy team, to qualify for the County Quarter Finals of the Two Bowl Singles to be held at Banister Park on Monday 6th July at 6 pm. Joining her at Banister will be Basingstoke Town's Anita Christian who had 4 very impressive wins against 4 Johns players. We wish them both good luck and hope to see two local players representing Hampshire at Leamington.

LADIES LOSE OUT IN TOP CLUB
Oakley's final hopes of a run in the 2026 national team events were dashed this evening as Basingstoke Town Ladies emulated the earlier success of their men in winning at Oakley in the Top Club event. Town, after a late surge, picked up the first point in the singles and although Oakley levelled up with a win in the Triples, the match slipped away as the Pairs, after holding a half way lead, and the Fours were conceded at 17 ends. Oakley scores: Janie Vickers lost 21-18; Diane Yarrall and Val Ryan lost 16-8; Carol Phillips, Jo Holland and Angie Rowe won 22-17; Wendy Aherne, Lesley Dumelow, Sandra Lee and Laura Butler lost 21-11.
Good luck to Town as they play either Cove or Alton Social in the next round.

MEMORABLE MURDER MYSTERY NIGHT
Congratulations to Wendy Aherne who tonight organised a special evening, attended by 56 members. After the first two Acts, we enjoyed from Olivers at Old Basing an excellent fish and chip supper. The Mystery the resumed and two Acts later the murderer was revealed. Who would have known that it turned out to be Rolf Denny! Yet another great social evening from our social committee and the bar did very well!!

A CLOSE RUN MIXED TOP CLUB
After first round exits in the National team events, Oakley finally managed a win in the County Mixed Top Club but it was so so close. Because there are only four rinks at Petersfield, the men's singles could not begin until one of the other 4 disciplines had completed their match and with the triples having a disastrous start and with the fours and the ladies singles both losing, it looked, for a long time, as if Petersfield would collect the necessary 3 points to win the match without the men's singles having to be played. However, the first point went to Oakley as Laura Butler came from behind to win her singles. The triples lost and with the points now shared at 1-1, Petersfied snatched the fours point leaving our pairs needing to win an extra end to keep Oakley in the match. The pairs did what was needed, so all eyes were now on the men's singles. This was a tight fought match but with the scores tied at 17-17 Martin Vickers picked up 4 shots to give Oakley the point needed for a 3-2 win. Congratulations to everyone but a special mention for Laura, who, on a very hot morning, not only played the singles but stood in a marker for the men's event.
Oakley scores: Laura Butler won 21-16; Martin Vickers won 21-17; Janie Vickers and Sean Lassman won 19-16; Mary Varndell, Steve Devonish and Spencer Kerley lost 22-15; Christine Williams, Angie Rowe, Ric Newson and Graham Tompkins lost 16-15
