The Herriard Sports Club club was established in 1884 and in its early years played sport in Glebe Field between Parsonage Cottages and the Saw Mill, however just before the outbreak of the WW2 the local electricity company installed a pole right on the edge of the cricket square, forcing the club to move! During the early part of the war football was played opposite the school, but by its end neg
otiation with the Cheyney family saw both cricket and football played in the field opposite Forge Cottage. This made it very convenient for Frank White and son Owen to run the club, and was only a short distance from the village pub (now the Fur and Feathers) where cricket teas were taken. In 1946 football moved behind the school, sharing a field with local livestock but in 1948 the cows moved out and the cricket team moved in, utilising the school facilities to change. Then in 1952 Owen White, secretary to both football and cricket, reformed the sport club and the original changing rooms were moved from Glebe Field. In 1978 the president of the club, J L Jervoise, opened a new pavilion positioned conveniently to serve both football and cricket, and providing changing and toilet facilities with electricity. In 1999 planning approval was granted to create a new sports field and pavilion on Nashes Field and following a major funding project this was officially opened in 2011 and named Herriard Green. This development has provided the club with fantastic grounds with full facilities and now includes tennis courts. Herriard Sports Club were founder members of the Hampshire Cricket League in the 1970's and currently field three teams in the league on a Saturday. The club also plays in the Basingstoke and North Hants Midweek Evening League and has a full fixture list of Sunday friendlies.
