Paddling after injury - why technique & getting coaching matters for your recovery.
Shoulder Injuries such as rotator cuff & impingement issues are a common problem that stops people from paddling, whether the injury was caused on land or on the water. It hinders mobility, strength and particularly causes problems with manual handling of boards & self rescue leading to safety concerns.
Janet has been suffering with shoulder problems since last year, but she’s had physiotherapy and has regained a lot of strength and is starting to return to her previous activities. She booked in a 1-1 coaching session for a refresher & to rebuild stamina and confidence, but more than that, we started to work on adjustments to paddle length, grip & positioning to reduce strain on the shoulder & to start to activate muscles in the mid back and core to improve reach through rotation, start to use core strength to drive the board past the blade & to protect the shoulder to prevent further damage.
I’ve also given her a suggestion of a range of exercises to incorporate into her routine with her PT to further strengthen the muscles needed to get her back on the water more regularly for her summer canal boat adventures!
We also had time for a bit of a fun photoshoot with her personal mascot. Can you spot what it is?
