I was fascinated when I read the study by JAMA Neurology showing that the more steps you take a day, the decrease in your risk of dementia. I think walking is amazing as in addition to that it also has other amazing benefits including:

✅ Improving cardiovascular health
✅ Supporting weight management
✅ Boosting mood and mental health
✅ Increasing energy levels
✅ Reducing the risk of chronic disease

When speaking to people who are beginning their fitness journey, I am often asked ‘How can I get fit, without going to the gym?’

I get it. When it comes to beginner fitness, some people find going to the gym and resistance training too intimidating. For a newbie who wants to start getting fit, going to the gym might be a step too far outside of your comfort zone. Even though you will need to go to the gym at some point, there are other ways to improve your fitness level in order to make small changes first. A survey conducted by the UK-based market research firm, YouGov , found that approximately 20% of gym members in the UK attend their gym less than once a month. Don’t allow yourself to become that statistic paying hundreds of pounds for something you are not using.

I would always recommend beginners to the gym to sign up for a shorter term contract, then use this time to find out about the atmosphere, community, accessibility and availability of equipment. After that you can sign up long term!

When joining the gym you need to know that even though one might be cheaper than another, does it have the equipment or classes you want in order to stick to your plan?

For example, if you love Spin Sessions and find a gym for £20 a month but it doesn’t run those classes, will you still go?

Do you need access to dumbbells and barbells, but the gym only has a limited supply that’s always in use?

You don’t want to be frustrated and demotivated because you can’t access the equipment you need. The extra money you are paying to go to the gym and doing something you love will be worth it. 💪
