You won’t be able to lose weight...

Your body just "clings on to fat".

It's your broken metabolism.

You've been trying since the first Monday of the year and nothing's budged.

Might as well stop now 🤷🏻‍♂️

Because it has nothing to do with the fact you don’t track your calories...

Or the fact that you do 3,000 steps a day...

Or the fact that your new gym membership has been used once in 2025...

Its definitely the metabolism.

Or is it?

Ideally I'd post the lovely group photo we took at the Christmas party but someone forgot to take it (I'm sure I'll find someone to blame for that).

So instead, I've combined the only two photos I took from the Christmas party in 2023 with some random shenanigans from this year. Pretty sure that'll do.

There are two types of people this time of year and I know which one you are.

The first are the ones eating everything in sight already, telling themselves they'll "start on the 1st".

The second are the ones who are starting now. The action takers who I'm going to talk about in this post, because I know you're one of them.

There's a chance the booking you see in this photo is my last free consult of the year.

“Quick Muscle Building Training Plan”

It’s attracting people who don’t want to… Well… Work.

Because all those things are designed to attract people who want all the results without having to sweat once, reduce their chocolate intake and do more than 5 minutes of cardio. And personal trainers know this.

The biggest issue then becoming YOU end up wondering why, after 6 months of inconsistently turning up to a burpee marathon, following their “free recipe book” and listening to them waffle on about their current dating life, you’re still 5 stone overweight and your back is still creaking.

Why have none of their promises come to fruition? Because you’ve been sold a dream. But here’s the good news for you...

To finally have a transformation photo worth posting all you need to do is outwork the majority of people.

Outwork doesn’t mean 5 hours of cardio a week and a 1,000 calorie diet. I’m simply saying you have to work harder than the average person is prepared to. Which isn’t hard.

It’s going for a 20 minute walk on your lunch break when others are watching their favourite TV show. It’s logging your food into MyFitnessPal ready for the next day instead of mindlessly watching YouTube. I don’t think doing those things is too crazy, to be honest.

But I bet you’re thinking, “Ok, where do I start then, Sam?”

Picture this...

Your house is a mess. You haven't washed up all day, there's a pair of socks hanging off your Christmas tree and you're pretty sure a family of spiders is living under the sofa. You're so busy with work and playing taxi with kids you haven't had the chance to clean yet. Do you...

A) Say, "Screw it" and spill red wine all over the carpet

B) Keep it as presentable as possible until you have a chance to give it a proper clean

Option A is what you're doing by feeling sad when you look in the mirror but eating 3 mince pies 5 minutes later.

If you're not going to start until January, that's your choice. But don't give yourself an even harder task come that time.

I have clients who have spent a good portion of 2024 losing weight, they've made incredible progress, but they still have some more to go come the new year.

But with all the parties, family gatherings and visits to see Santa over the next few weeks, they know losing any more weight for the year isn't going to happen.

But they still have a target.

Only, this target isn't, "I want to lose X amount by Christmas."

It's, "I don't want to be any heavier than X by Christmas."

It allows them to have some untracked foods and enjoy a glass of wine whilst wrapping presents, but it still keeps them accountable and on track to kick off the new year with a bang.

Maybe you don't relate to the "big transformations".

You've not got 50 pounds to lose.

You can't think of anything worse than being a size 6, constantly cold and hungry.

But you know you'd be happier if you lost just a couple of inches off your waist.

If you could walk up the stairs and not get so out of breath.

If you could pick your kid up and not have to worry whether this will be the time you put your back out.

You're the same as Ethan.

You want to get rid of that bit of fat hanging over your shorts, gain a bit of definition to your arms and be able to run faster for longer.

You know how to run.

You know how to train for a race.

But what you don't know is how to...

✔️ Combine your goal of losing 5" off your waist with your love of running.

✔️ Combine your goal of filling your arms out in your sleeves whilst burning through so many calories on a run.

✔️ Strengthen your legs to avoid injury whilst training for your first 10K.

✔️ Eat pre and post race to fuel yourself and recover quickly.

Same as my two clients who, last weekend, ran 10K and 15K races.

Ethan clocked in at 45:10 for his 10K, wiping 5 minutes off his previous PB.

Kaspar clocked in at 70 minutes for his 15K (and did the first 10K in 42 minutes!). Placing 24th of 436 runners.

I did NOT take charge of these guys running plans. I know where my expertise lie and it is not in the world of pavement pounding.

They came to me for help with combining their muscle building goals with their love of running.

They wanted help strengthening their legs to withstand long distance running.

They needed guidance around pre and post race food.

"Your Diet Isn't Just What You Eat."

Sounds like the start of a post written by someone who doesn't understand weight loss is about calories in vs. calories out.

But I think, after getting myself pretty damn lean and having a ton of client results to my name, you can trust me when I say...

Losing weight is ALSO about:

✔️ What You Watch - That documentary on TV about going low carb thrown a spanner in your thinking? Turn it off. You were doing just fine before you watched that.

✔️ Who You Follow - Your favourite influencer promoting a fat loss pill? Notice how they get 10% commission of the sale...

✔️ What You Read - Sometimes we can accidentally overwhelm ourselves with Googling. Read enough to help you, but not so much you end up worse off than when you first set out.

✔️ Who You Listen To - Who have they worked with? What have they done? Have they walked the walk themselves? There's some great info out there, but there's also some terrible info as well.

✔️ The People You Spend Time With - Your husband might mean well when he tries to tell you you should stop eating fruit "because of the sugar". But he's a plumber. I don't tell him how to fix a toilet.

All of these things play into the psychological aspect of weight loss.

There's no escaping the fact you're going to need to change your eating habits in order to lose weight. But it might not only be the foods you're consuming that's the problem.

You're working every hour God sends.

You're dropping the kids off at school, football practice, trumpet lessons and taekwondo (because who doesn't want to raise a trumpet playing assassin called Ronaldo).

You have a spare couple hours a week to dedicate to you. And so far you've spent it saving recipe ideas on Instagram, doing 20 minutes of treadmill walking in the gym and Googling the "best diet for fat loss".

Then you realise you can easily stop wasting your precious time and ask for help, like Ethan did.

This is what can happen when you put your trust in someone who delivers on what they say they will.

Nothing fancy, just a plan that takes into consideration your lifestyle. The fact you can't be in the gym 8 hours a week. The fact you probably still want to have a couple of beers with your mates. The fact you don't want to be the next best bodybuilder.

Every PT bangs on about how many spaces they have left, how many clients they have and the number of sessions they deliver a week. But there’s one very important number that never gets mentioned, and I wonder why…

Chloe became a client in March 2020. That’s nearly 5 years we’ve known each other through lockdown we**am workouts, her 150 pound weight loss journey, the birth of her first child and that time I had to alter her workout plan because she'd drunkenly fallen down a set of stairs (I haven't told her I'm posting this so I'll probably be in the s**t on Monday).

And we’ve nearly made it to 2025.

From 280 odd pounds down to 130 pounds, to giving birth to her first child to now losing the "mum weight".

Which is an incredible achievement and one that makes me proud to do the work I do.

Unfortunately, most people want what Chloe achieved, but don’t want to put in the years to get there. If there was a way to make this a quick and easy process, nobody would be overweight. The only thing you can do is the work.

You’ve seen Chloe before on my social media and, guess what, you should be seeing the same people, because people that walk through the door should be reaping the value personal training has to offer. So much so that they make it a part of their life.

And this brings me to the metric nobody wants to talk about in their personal training business, and that’s retention.

80% of the clients who were with me on January 1st of this year are still with me today. I’m going to toot my own trumpet and tell you that’s high.

Personal training is a luxury investment, I don’t deny that. But it’s one that, when stuck to with the right professional, will reap more physical and mental benefits than any short-term, “quick fix” can.

There are only 9 weeks left until the 1st of January 2025 😱

What this also means is it's about time every PT begins to try and scare you into starting personal training just before Christmas by saying something like:

"Why wait? Take action today"

"If you start now you'll be ahead of everyone else"

Truth be told, it might just be that you are waiting for a message just like that to give you the kick up the butt you need to finally start investing in yourself.

Or it could be hearing that sort of talk wouldn't make a single difference and you'd be too busy tucking into your Friday night chippy tea to even notice.

I mean realistically we have about 7 weeks left of the year because, let's be honest, who is actually dieting around Christmas? I certainly won't be.

For at least 2 weeks we are going to be spending a lot more time at Christmas parties, drinking some extra tipple like me in this photo and just generally indulging a little more than we normally do throughout the year, right?

So let me put it to you like this...

If you did take action action today and reached out to me about personal training you could potentially be looking at losing around 8-12lbs.

Do you think if you lost that weight now that you'd have a little more room to fit in a couple more mince pies or a few extra slices of yule log guilt free?

Do you think you'd feel a little better knowing that your jeans didn't feel like they were about to burst open at the seams when you sit down in front of your colleagues at your work party?

Wouldn't it feel great to not be out of breath when you go for that Boxing Day walk?
