19th session of the year, the mark was mumbles infront of the George pub in the hopes of hounds and maybe a tope!

The evening started with me hunting the shoreline at Knab Rock for the hopes of finding some fresh peelers. After half an hour of searching I had a container of hardbacks as no peelers were to be found...I did though catch my first 2 sand eels and a rock goby by hand.

Just remember that the Oxford dictionary states this about fishing:
"Fishing - Noun - the sport or business of catching fish" (this is important to mention now as you will see later!).

A quick relocation to the car park infront of the George pub where I was joined by Aidan Parish and his partner. We set up our rods and commenced fishing!
2 big rods for me, 1 with a pully dongle, size 4/0 circle hook and using hardbacks and squid for the hounds, the other rod with a pulley dongle, size 8/0 circle hook with a wire bite trace and baited with half mackerels and squid for a tope.
I also had my usual tipped feathers out on my little scratching rod in the hopes of something smaller while the bigger rods did their thing.

Other than one rattle on each rod there was nothing else to show for 5hrs fishing. Big baits, little baits, combos of baits. It all came back untouched and whole regardless of been blasted out (my new rods and reels doing the business there!), close in or somewhere in between.

Did see a minimum of 15 rods from a group of people on the knab slipway and although they did have a few fish it wasnt many by the looks of it!

Something I did change up on my rigs which helped alot was using a Snap Link Barrel Rolling Swivel on all my hook lengths, sped up the recasting 10 fold compared to me usually stripping the bait, re-baiting and then casting out again. Instead I reel in, unclipped old length, clips new one on pre-baited and then cast out (y)

So no fish caught on the rod and reel but by hell am I counting the 3 fish caught by hand šŸ˜† 2 new species on for the yr, 17 species so far and 23 different species since I started recording my catches 1st Jan 2025.

Whats your go to tope rigs all?

It looks like the Tope of a better size are starting to show from the Swansea shore so it's time to start making some rigs up!

Let me know your build from the hook size, bite line material/strength, baits etc.

My PB tope pup for reference, got a way to go for a big one!

18th session of the year last night.

The target a double figure hound and the mark Swansea West Pier.
Joined by Lawrence Turner and Riley of , Aidan Parish, Jonathan Daviess we set up at the end of the pier at around 1700 and got about to the businesses of catching some fish!

Very quiet start for everyone with just a few little nibbles and knocks but nothing connecting.

Mixed baits and rigs all around but I was using on the two big rod with pulley dongles a mix of squid, bluey, sandeels, peelers and hardbacks & on my little scratching rod my usual tipped feathers.

Lawrence was the 1st one to land the target species, followed swiftly by another and another, one of these been a new PB for him šŸ¤˜šŸ»

After this everyone else started hooking up to hounds and I was left with only the scratching rod seeing any action with dog after dog....and then to help improve my mood my crab net got jammed into the rocks and some complete womble of a boat deliberately went across my line and cut it off. We know this was deliberate as it was his 2nd attempt by coming far too close to the pier and at speed.

Towards the end of the night the guys had landed 19 hounds, a number of dogs and a nice huss, while I was sitting on 9 dogs.

Finally after 9hrs of fishing my 1st good run and hook set! Swiftly followed by my first hound of the night, falling to hardback crab.
A little less than half an hour later the same rod goes again and just as that one is coming up the wall the 2nd rod goes! Amazing, 2 hounds landed at the same time!
Just shows perseverance does pay off and the luck of the evening can change in a heartbeat.

It also gave me the chance to try my new reels, Penn Surfblaster iii Longcast 8000 from Basstastic Fishing, what a great reel. Very little effort to bring the hounds in with these paired with my penn tidal 420 rough ground rods I picked up a few weeks ago. Also casting much further than before but I do need to work on my technique more.

A 4th hound was dropped at the wall, we tried handballing it up as it had wrapped itself around Aidans line :-( but I did get to help his land his 4th Hound of the night.

Totals for the night between us was 25 hounds landed, 1 Huss, far too many dogs and 1 very broken fisherman!
Lawrence had a cracking session with 10 of the hounds falling to him and net man Jonathan helping everyone out to land the fish.
