After a wet night in Barrow, the skies seemed to clear just in time for Saturday morning’s early game, with Hawcoat Park expecting a strong match against an in form Askam U12 Blues.
And for much of the first half, there was very little between the sides. In fact it was the Ravens who got the breakthrough, and what a goal it was! 🔥 Huddy reacted brilliantly to a goal kick, trapping the ball and absolutely thumping it into the far corner from distance. The goal of the season shortlist is already filling up, just with September entries! 🚀
Ravens had a great chance to make it two when Noah raced through one-on-one and tried to lift the ball over the advancing keeper, only to see his effort sail just over. But Askam did not let that phase them. They responded with two goals in quick succession just before the interval to leave the game finely poised going into the second half.
After the break Askam scored an early fourth, although Ravens came back into it with Huddy getting his second of the morning. This time he took the ball past a defender onto his left foot before rifling home for a brace. ⚽⚽
But from there, Askam took control. With the wind behind them, they pinned Ravens back and made it increasingly difficult for them to get out of their own half. They were the stronger side on the day and deservedly turned the game around to take a 6–2 victory.
There were still plenty of positives for Ravens. Isaac put in another determined display, making some important challenges down the right, while Alfie was tested far more than in our opening two games and produced several excellent saves, including getting fingertips to efforts to turn them around the post. George, Harry, Gabe, followed by Riley and Joseph, also made important blocks and tackles to repel further attacks. 🧤👏
After three league games in eight days, there were understandably some tired legs out there. Our first defeat of the season, but plenty to learn from and plenty of positive signs as this group continues to develop.
🌟 Player of the Match today went to Hudson.
Coach Chris said, "Huddy has started the season fantastically with 5 goal contributions in 3 games, but throughout today he didn't stop running, trying, and leading by example. We know Huddy has power in his right foot, but his first must have been a 35 yard unstoppable screamer on his left!!! Then he added a brilliant second effort in the second half too. Well done Hudson! Keep it up!"
