A very soggy day today running orienteering at Lee Abbey Devon.

Quite the opposite to yesterday, as I had a great day walking the south west coast path with students from the Atlantic academy for a mindfulness day after a busy schedule of exams and other learning.

We walked from the school to Bucks Mills and then followed the coast path to Clovelly.

It was a gift of an Autumnal day, the frost was out, the sky was blue and the sun was warming our faces! The sea was so calm, you could see the blue lines of different tidal flows and the clarity across to Lundy island was so crisp, you could see the colours of the rock.

Some days are just dreamy!

There are some work days that you will never forget. Today is one of them.

Working today teaching Bushcraft to a group of year 5 (9/10 year olds) students.

The farmer turned up and released the Ram into the field of Ewes! Well it didn't take long for sweet nothings to be whispered into the ears of three Ewes and the Ram was happy to work!

The teachers were cringing as the birds and the bees are not taught until next year! The kids were laughing, very excited by it all. I gave the talk of the birds and the bees, explaining why the Ram wears an ink bag. They laughed at the Ewes getting orange bums once the Ram had mounted.

Coming back from our session there were a lot of orange bottoms, a happy Ram and some eager ladies hanging around him.

Kids are funny though, a few were appalled, looking away as they couldn't watch sheep s*x! Others said they couldn't believe they had seen sheep s*x and then the others were just thrilled at witnessing country life!

Roll on spring, so we can see the lambs!

A beautiful day off last Saturday and so I ventured off to South Devon to paddle on the lower Dart with Bideford Canoe Club (BCC)

It is such a scenic paddle, with beautiful Autumnal light and colours.

The low levels gave us fun shutes to whizz down, sometimes creating a sense of being on a log flume at a theme park as we navigated around small islands of grass and rock.

Steam trains went by all day and we had the company of Mandarin ducks and a kingfisher.

Here's hoping to more white water days in a canoe this winter!

Henry has made it from Bristol to Barnstaple!!!

The final day (4th day)

Dulverton - Barnstaple 40 miles!!!

What a journey it has been and Bristol seems an eternity ago now!

The total mileage cycled was 146 miles!!!

Henry has done so well as today it started with a 2 mile push up out of Dulverton! It was a beastly hill but he did it with a smile on his face as he was looking forward to getting home.

We then enjoyed lovely undulating roads across Exmoor National Park, taking in amazing panoramic views of fields laid out like a patchwork quilt.

There were a few other steep climbs but these also gave some amazing fast downs too, a lovely feeling knowing that you are getting a few free miles in.

The past three days have been roasting, today was perfect for Exmoor as it was a lot cooler, windy with the odd spots of rain. There was little shade on the route today and so it was a great day for the cooler temperature.

Being on the homestretch was great for Henry as he recognised the place names and was able to count down to home. Another benefit to being near home was friends came out and met us on the route with drinks, chocolates and freshly picked blackberries!

After Bratton Fleming, it was a wonderful descent down to Barnstaple and finishing by the clock tower! We met friends and Nikki and Valerie from the Littlest Wildlife Hotel.

A quick bit of tea and cake at The Bike Hut and then we made our way over to The Voice where James kindly gave Henry and Nikki a lot of airtime as he interviewed Henry about his ride and Nikki Rule-Jackson about the charity.

We are very proud of Henry, he has done amazingly well. He only had a few grumps this morning due to tiredness but other than that he has been super happy and he hasn't got upset when it has been hard going.

He wants to thank everyone for your support, encouraging comments and donations. He is blown away that our original target of £1000 has been smashed and he has currently raised £1304.

Nikki has said that this money will cover the cost of seven hoglets (baby hedgehogs) being rescued, treated, rehabilitated and then released!

The donation page is still open for a few more days and so please help us to raise even more money to get a few more hoglets rehabilitated!

Henry's Bristol to Barnstaple bike challenge....

So he we go on our last Day.

Henry is definitely feeling tired now and the hills of Exmoor are seeming a bit intimidating at the moment, but we will just have to keep saying "just keep cycling (or pushing)" as Dory says "just keep swimming" in finding Nemo!

It is a very remote day, no pubs or cafes en route, just the wonderful wilderness of the Moors. We just hope we have enough water!

We will finish in Barnstaple at the clock tower, our live link of our location is listed below. If you have time, it would be wonderful to see you at the finish line.

Follow our location to see when we will be coming into town!

Whoop whoop Henry has smashed day 3!

Taunton-Dulverton: 39.7miles with 2600ft/ 790m of climbing!

Today has been hard and Henry has done so well!

It is hot and even though we enjoyed the flat Grand Western Canal, the rest of the day has been lots of ups and downs! And some very big ups, one lasting for over 5kms! This was climbing up out of Tiverton, through National Trust’s Knightshayes to just above Bampton. The descent to Bampton was fun but just after this, the emergency Mars bars were bust out as the lanes continued to make us work all the way to Dulverton.

Henry has amazed me as to how strong he is now. He easily pulls away from me on the ups and keeps up with Dad. I catch up on the flat but he is loving this adventure and still bouncing on the pedals at the end of the day. His legs are aching now though!

We have all enjoyed making new discoveries of new lanes and off road trails that we have driven past so many times but having no idea that they exist. The canal was stunning, lots of lovely nature and Lillies glowing in the sunlight.

When we have a break we check the donations page. Henry is chuffed to see more money coming in and he is very proud that we have nearly reached £1000!!!

Tomorrow is our last day, it is going to be the hardest as it is traversing Exmoor and so lots and lots of up and downs and no cake stops or water filling en route.

Please keep the messages and donations coming in to keep our legs working and keeping Henry strong with your encouragement.

Tomorrow morning, I will post a tracker and so if any of you want to follow our progress and pop out to give him a cheer you can!

We will be finishing at Barnstaple Clock tower. Depending on the hills I would imagine it will be between 3pm and 4pm. It would be amazing to see you at the finish!

Henry's completed Day 2!

Street-Taunton 33.3 miles!

Henry has now made it half way along his challenge of cycling from Bristol to Barnstaple!

The day began with 5 miles to a pub for brekkie. I had envisaged a nice quiet country beer garden to sit in the sun and have breakfast. The reality was quite different. It was a truck stop with lorries idling located just off a busy noisy road. The breakfast was very good though and so it was still a lucky find. Henry was then fuelled by American pancakes and maple syrup!

He is on fine form even to the point of arriving in Taunton and coming across some bike jumps/ramps in a park, he whizzed round and enjoyed these for a while!

We are obviously cycling with him, I am not sure where he gets his energy from as frankly I enjoyed a sit down in the sun whilst he whizzed around the obstacles!

We have all really enjoyed today. No way near as many hills as yesterday, lots of off road, along the canals and lovely quiet lanes as we cycled through more Somerset levels, including a trail just like the Tarka trail which even had sculptures along it too!

The scenery is stunning and although relatively close to home, it is vastly different, so flat and so arable, it felt like we were in Normandy, France or in the Fens in the South East.

We have seen lovely community events as we have cycled through villages, one having a scare crow competition and another, having a massive garage sale with lots of houses all selling their unwanted clothes, tools, trinkets outside of their houses.

The sun has been amazing but very warm, it has given us a chance to lay in it along the canal whilst having a quick 5 minute rest and back stretch out.

Lunch at a lock cafe was an extended break as it was so busy, we were there for over an hour and a half getting a sandwich. It was tasty though and hey we had time plus a few rounds of Top Trumps.

The Taunton Bridgewater water canal has a lovely space exhibit. They have scaled down the size of the planets and their spacing from the sun. As you travel down the canal it shows you the accurate distance of each planet from the sun based on the scale. It also gave the count down to Taunton which was nice!

Once in Taunton we took a bit of time to relax by the river and we were lucky enough to see an otter swim by! Amazing! It made our day!

We are now fed and watered by the lovely Sue Taylor and Mick, who have very kindly allowed us to stay for the night and allowed our sore muscles to be pummeled in their hot tub! Pure luxury! Thank you so much!

Henry is snoring away as I type, he is well ready for day 3: Taunton-Tiverton-Bampton-Dulverton with big hills at the end of the day! 😬

Once again, thank you for your kind messages and donations. We are cruising towards our target of £1000 for the Littlest Wildlife Hotel. Please keep spreading the word and help us to get more donations!

Henry has completed Day 1!!!

Bristol- Street 40.6 miles done in just under 7.5 hours

It has been a great day and Henry has done so well.

It was a tricky start as the cycle route was closed in Bristol and so it took some time to navigate around the closures.

Once out of the city, we then had to climb up over the Mendips! It was a hot and sweaty climb and push but we made it. A reward of an ice cream and cold drink was enjoyed at the top, before descending down to Wooky Hole, then onto Wells where we had a quick peaceful rest in front of the Cathedral.

We then cycled through peaceful, quiet, very straight lanes through the Somerset Levels, leading us to Glastonbury, the most fragranced high street that we have ever come across, with incense pouring out of every shop. The last stretch was a quick jaunt across more of the Somerset levels with some busier roads and faster cars but these stretches were only short before we made it to Street!

Henry is super chuffed and had a few happy tears when we reached our hostel, he has enjoyed a shower and dinner, now for a quick game in the hostel before sleep!

Thank you for your donations. Please keep them coming. Tomorrow's destination is Taunton!
