Yesterday we had a group of middle-aged people come up asking where 7 Falls was, as they were planning on taking a BBQ up there.
This is absolutely not a post to shame anyone. They clearly weren’t from around here and simply didn’t realise how serious the situation is at the moment.
But it really highlighted how much education is needed.
People need to understand that one tiny spark – whether deliberate or completely accidental – can start a fire that burns for days.
A disposable BBQ, a cigarette end, even rubbish and glass left behind can all contribute.
The amount of wildlife being lost is heartbreaking. Livestock is also being affected. Once these fires get into the heather, there are very few natural breaks, so they just keep burning until either they run out of fuel or we get some serious rain.
Please educate your family, your friends, your kids, your parents and anyone visiting the area.
🚫 No fires on the moors.
🚫 No disposable BBQs.
🚫 Make sure ci******es are fully out and take the ends home.
🚫 Take your rubbish home – and if you can, take someone else’s too.
These moors aren’t just somewhere nice for a walk. They are home to wildlife, working farmland and part of our community.
This post isn’t about blaming anyone. It’s about making sure people understand the consequences, because sadly a lot of people still don’t.
The firefighters and volunteers have been working tirelessly for days now.
Please think before you light anything. One careless decision can have devastating consequences.
