🏏 FIRSTS BATTLE TO A WIN 🏏
The 1st team returned to winning ways on Saturday as they were victorious over Sprotbrough at the Yorkshire Conservatory Warm Roofs Cricket Ground.
After skipper Levitt won the toss and elected to bat, openers Callum Bentley and James Kennedy got off to very solid start with an opening stand of 76 before Bentley inexplicably attempted to reverse sweep one off middle stump on 39, and was pinned in front of all three. 76-0 soon became 85-4, as Taylor and Nawaz fell cheaply and Kennedy ended his good knock on 38. Phil Smith made 24 to steady the ship in the middle order, before a quite elegant unbeaten 35 by Joe McLee from just 30 balls. The Briggers closed on a healthy 180-9 from their 46 overs.
After a sublime On PAR Health tea (accompanied by Becky’s Bhajis™), the Briggers didn’t allow the visitors to settle with the bat. Two big wickets early on enthused the Brig fielders, with Ryan Mann’s generous advice taken the wrong way by Sprot’s number three. Twenties from Fidler and Cook re-built the innings somewhat but openers Levitt (4-42) and Kennedy (3-38) fought on well to keep the run tally low and the wickets flowing. At 93-8, the game looked done and dusted with spin pair of McLee (2-55) and Mann (1-20) making the most of the dry conditions. A ninth wicket partnership between Eric and Tim threatened to ruin the Briggers’ mood ahead partying in the car park, as the first successful reverse sweeps of the day were played. The pair put 54 on, before McLee took a caught and bowled which defied explanation. Having mulled it over, the conclusion was reached that no-one else on planet earth could replicate such heroics. The final piece of the puzzle was slotted into place by James Kennedy to complete a brilliant all-round performance for the young gnome to bowl Sprotbrough out for 161 and claim all 12 points!
