Sherwood Forresters Longbow Archery Club

Sherwood Forresters Longbow Archery Club SFLAC is a longbow only archery club whose aim is to promote the use and enjoyment of traditional ELB Why are we different from other archery clubs?

SFLAC is a longbow only archery club whose aim is to promote the use and enjoyment of traditional English longbows and warbows. We shoot in the grounds of Barlborough Hall, Barlborough, Derbyshire, J30 M1. We are two minutes from the Motorway and we are ideally situated for longbow archery in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire. The area used by the Club on a da

y-to-day basis is in excess of 12 acres of rough grass and trees including a small wood, ideal for Roving Mark and Field Shoots. Our target field is approximately 50 yards by 180 yards (plus an extra 150 yards overshoot) and is mown every week. We only shoot English longbows. Whilst most other clubs seem to shoot only in one or maybe two disciplines such as target or field archery, we ask what is wrong with other styles of archery? At Sherwood Forresters we shoot target, clout, roving, field and all forms of archery. We like to think we have put the fun back into archery and that variety is the spice of life as they say!

This is a long shot, a chap by the name of Andrew Kenning contacted the club through me with regard to Beginner's Courses etc., just after we got slung off the Barlborough School grounds and we had to stop doing them. Unfortunately I have lost his contact details and can't get in touch with him to tell him that we will shortly be re-starting Beginner's courses, etc. So, Andrew, if you're still out there and following this page please get in touch again.

Hi Folks,

I think today could probably go down as the first proper full shoot at our new venue. We were using, what we call, the lower field which is the most suitable for target and medium distance shooting. A pretty good turn-out, twelve people in all. Dave, Steve G and Gary set up the new WC facilities. Eight of us were shooting. Peter and Yumi were wandering around keeping an eye on things. Weather was a bit grey and overcast but it was warm enough (just) and there was no rain. It was quite (i.e. extremely) muddy in the parking area but the field was firm enough and okay for walking on.

All in all, a pretty good day

Good Morning, t'committee has been in conference and the sensible decision has been taken that tomorrow's shoot is CANCELLED.

The parking in the lower field will be very muddy, and the forecast temperature and wind chill will make for a very miserable experience. Temperature will also be borderline for the bows. Stay cosy and warm, this is the way.

Cheers Steve J.

Hi Folks,

Well we had our first roving marks at the new venue this morning. Still feeling our way around the topography of the site but there is plenty of scope for some good/testing shots.

Weather was a bit miserable, overcast with occasional light to moderate showers therefore little or no contrast for photography, another time maybe. We only shot for an hour before adjourning for warm drinks and biscuits.

Myself, Matt, Chris, Nigel, Andrea and Robert did the shooting. Dave W and Steve G were messing about in the lorry back making it presentable(ish!)(thanks chaps!), Peter and Yumi followed the rove and did a bit of safety spotting for un-sighted shots. There is a lot of potential for some great shots but it's probably only going to be suitable for roving in the winter. Too much of it will be unsighted in the summer when the trees and hedges are in leaf. Be good for field/3D shoots in the summer. On days when we want a change from target shooting.

Lets hope for some clearer, brighter, drier weather soon.

Cheers Steve J.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Update on our homeless situation (for those who won't have seen Dave W's email).

There has been a preliminary inspection of a potential new site this morning by Peter B, Dave W, Steve G and George A. As a result a rental arrangement has been arranged with the site owner. As David puts it,

"The site we have now been offered is indeed a most interesting and, to quote our club secretary Peter, a rather quirky location. It is huge and offers multiple options for Target, Field, Clout and Roving on different areas which will be easily accessible from our clubhouse. It has excellent security and we will not be troubled by dogs or public paths as none of the latter exist on the site. The odd deer, badger, fox, etc might be resident in parts of the wooded areas but there are no gnomes, fairies, hobbits, orcs, wood elves or nymphs lurking in the vicinity …… (well, at least none that I am aware of anyway)."

It's going to be different folks, but we have a new home and a new adventure to look forward to.

There are still some logistics to be dealt with, moving the containers, site familiarisation visits, etc.

Members will be notified when we can all start using our new home. There will also eventually be information as to when we can start doing beginners courses and have-a-goes again.

Personally I very much look forward to seeing you all again.

Happy shooting. Steve J.

Dave W has just been in touch. As you should know the school has actually gone into administration.

As a direct result we now have no access to the grounds. There will be NO shooting tomorrow or for the foreseeable future.

We await Peter's discussions with the Administrators before we know what will be happening in the future.

Watch this space.

It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I write to inform you of the immediate closure of Mount St Mary’s College and Barlborough Hall School with effect from today, 30th July 2025. This decision has not been made lightly, and we understand the shock and distress this news will undoubte...
