We welcome players of all ages in the club. With juniors (under 16), we do require a parent or guardian, or other legally responsible adult, to attend meetings with their charge/s to comply with safeguarding legislation. We have a wide range of abilities within the club, and no-one should feel intimidated. Informal coaching is usually possible, However, while we're not big enough to have a formal coaching structure, we have several players who enjoy coaching and helping other players. Meetings are on Wednesday evenings from 7pm until around 9.30/10pm at Penrhyn Hall, Bangor. Cost: See pinned post on this page. Social games are offered on Wednesday evening, but we also compete (rated games) in the Gwynedd League (against Caernarfon, Colwyn Bay and Rhyl & Prestatyn). Many members also participate in the Gwynedd Individual Championships (5 rounds across the whole season), and weekend congresses at Llandudno and Rhyl (lifts usually available). All competitive chess is entirely optional. Please send a message here on our page or email [email protected] if you have any questions or are interested in trying out a few games at the club.

Huge congratulations to all our players who took part in the Caernarfon Chess Congress over the weekend! Special mention to Chris who won the top group with 4.5/5 despite being the bottom seed and over 200 points below the two highest rated players.

In a tough group B, Inigo finished with a very respectable 2.5/5 which saw him take joint 3rd. In the C group Matt got 3/5 claiming joint second. Aidan got 2/5 and Sophie 1/5 which was a decent result for a first tournament, especially playing a group higher than expected. We’re very proud of you all.

Llongyfarchiadau mawr i’n holl chwaraewyr a chymerodd rhan yng Nghyngres Gwyddbwyll Caernarfon dros y penwythnos. Llongyfarchiadau yn enwedig i Chris a enillodd y grŵp cyntaf er ei fod ei gradd yn is na radd yr holl chwaraewyr arall a fwy na 200 o bwyntiau yn is na’r blaen chwaraewyr.

Yng ngrŵp B cryf, llwyddodd Inigo gael 2.5/5 a thrydydd le ar y cyd. Yng grwp C, cafodd Matt 3/5 ac ail le ar y cyd. Gorffennodd Aidan gyda 2/5 a Sophie 1/5 - canlyniad da mewn cystadleuaeth gyntaf ac yn chwarae grwp yn uchaf na ddisgwyliwyd. Rydym yn falch iawn ohonoch chi i gyd.

Match Report Bangor v Colwyn Bay

Last week we played our final League match, at home to Colwyn Bay. We started our season playing Colwyn Bay away and so this was nicely symmetrical. We entered the game knowing that we had to win if we wanted to win the League.

On top board Chris took on Richard in a long and complex game. Material was level for a long time before Chris went a pawn down in the endgame, recovered two pawns and made good use of his queen and advance passer to force the win.

On board 2 I had a very fast and fortuitous game against Barrie which was finished by a tactic that either won a piece or led to mate.

On board 3 Peter took on David’s English opening with the ‘reverse Siciliian’ e5. He got a good position and managed to win an exchange. David picked up a pawn as well but for a while it looked as though Peter’s pair of rooks would be too dominant. However David managed to pick up another pawn, giving him an outside passer and defended it well with rook and knight meaning the game was drawn.

On Board 4 Aidan took on the very experienced Richard. He played well but lost first an exchange and then a rook. He fought back well and was well up on time but Richard’s extra material eventually told as he broke through with a mating attack. Unfortunate for Aidan but it doesn’t take away from the excellent first season he’s had in competitive chess.

Bangor 2.5-1.5 Colwyn Bay

Chris 1-0 Richard D
Catriona 1-0 Barrie
Peter 0.5-0.5 David
Aidan 0-1 Richard H

A really good result against a team who outrated us on most boards and one that gave us the League title. Colwyn Bay and Bangor both had 8 points but as we’d beaten them twice that meant we were League Champions. Commiserations to Colwyn Bay who were pipped at the post, it was incredibly close.
