Grappling with my Weight

Grappling with my Weight Brazilian Jiu Jitsu blue belt, wannabe strongman and his journey to lose weight. In October 2013 I started my journey after being weighed at the Doctors.

While I’ve always knew I was big, the figures were even worse than I had imagined. I weighed in at a hefty 190kg. I then decided enough was enough and it was time to change, so I started Phase One classes at Aberdeen Martial Arts Group at Transition Extreme. Since then I received my Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, won a good haul of medals and received my 2nd Kyu in Judo. I have recently started

training strongman and stone lifting and found a real joy and interested in it. The idea behind the ‘like’ page initially was to avoid filling my personal facebook profile with updates and to have somewhere separate to track what I’m doing. As well as that, it gives me the ability to post what I’m up to and how I’m getting on, as well as to hopefully connecting with others who are on a similar journey and share tips & tricks, recipes, workouts etc. If the page is something you feel you’d like to see more of, or interested in what I’m up to. Please give the page a ‘like’.

Getting imaginative with the home training!

Grip & fluff work in one!

Sandbag training fun today!

This was round one with Claire. Sped up as it’s nearly 4 minutes long!

Was meant to be 5 minutes but I gassed out after 4 rounds so Claire did the 5th on her own. Made up for it by doing another set every 30secs instead of a minute!

Cardio killer!

Since I haven’t updated about my Dinnie Stones attempt last Saturday, here it is:

Sadly as much as I’d love to post that I lifted the Dinnies side by side, but it wasn’t my day.

I trained hard, I trained well but these things happen. I can make all the excuses in the world but sadly I didn’t get a full lift as I wanted!

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t beating myself up, but third times the charm and as broken as I feel right now, the more I’m determined to get it done. The stones aren’t going anywhere, so third times the charm

On the bright side we raised an amazing £520 for my chosen charity, Mental Health Aberdeen, so I’m over the moon with that!

The stone lifting & strength community is amazing and I’m so grateful for all the tips, help and encouragement.

The Dinnie Stones 💪🏼

On the 1st of February I am taking on the world famous Dinnie Stones where I am going to attempt to lift them both side by side & straddle.

The Dinnie Stones weigh 188kg & 144kg for a combined weight of 332kg which will be the heaviest thing I have ever lifted! Less than 150 people have managed this famous feat of strength and I am looking to put my name in the history books!

Mental Health Aberdeen have been a huge help to be in the past so I’m looking to do what I can to raise awareness and hopefully give a little back!

I’ve set up a just giving page and will be donating my own money towards MHA too. If anyone is interested in doing so also, please follow the link below!

It would genuinely mean the world to me if people could get behind MHA. They do an amazing service that’s sorely needed.

Had the honour of being the lucky thirteenth person to lift the Ardblair Nicol Stones!

162kg & 117kg for a combined weight of 279kg, which at the time was heaviest weight I’ve picked off the floor!

Nicol Walking Stones (138kg & 114kg)

A lift and wee walk from a couple weeks ago!

After originally just wanting to lift them up, I managed (much to my surprise) to walk about half the bridge before my grip gave out!

I guess I’ve found something else to add to the bucket list - to walk the full length! Or go full Matt Jones and walk there and back. Phenomenal!

Great fun!

Dinnie Replica side by side PB

155 & 113kg

Yesterday managed a fairly comfortable new PB on the Killer Strength Dinnie Replicas.

Got 33kg & 31kg to go to get to the full real Dinnie Stone weight! Hopefully give it a go by the end of the year, if not 2020!
