Paddleboard Safety - Firth coast

Multiple 999 calls alerted HM Coastguard to 4 paddleboarders being swept out to sea from Beach yesterday afternoon, Saturday 6th April.

Coastguard Rescue Teams from and attended immediately along with the RNLI Buckie Lifeboat. Coastguard Rescue Officers deployed to keep the casualties in sight and guide the Lifeboat to their location. The wind speed in the area was over 45 mph from the South East, with gusts in excess of 55 mph. The casualties were recovered by Lifeboat and taken to Buckie, met by the Scottish Ambulance Service and given a medical check up.

Conditions along the Moray coast this weekend are completely unsuitable for any water sports activity.

Paddleboards:

•Never use these when there is an offshore wind, this means when the wind is blowing from the land out to sea.
•Always wear a personal floatation device (PFD) and suitable clothing.
•Always wear the correct leash and hold onto your board if you get into trouble.
•Carry a means of calling for help that you can reach in an emergency e.g. a mobile phone in a waterproof case around your neck.
•Always check the weather forecast and tide times.
•Always let someone know where you are going and how long you will be and try to paddle with someone else.

If you end up in the water, FLOAT to live!

•Fight your instinct to thrash around!
•Lie back, extend your arms and legs out!
•Gently move your arms and legs to help you float.
•Stay like this until your breathing is controlled.
•Only then, call for help and attempt to swim for safety.

In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

If you’re taking to the water on a paddleboard or kayak this weekend, we strongly recommend wearing a buoyancy aid such as a life jacket.

On Loch Lomond, byelaws are in place which state you must have a buoyancy aid on board. You may be asked to return to shore if you don’t have one.

Life jackets can be hired from some leisure providers around Loch Lomond, subject to availability.
