We are SO proud of Caru! She quietly goes about doing the most amazing things, never drawing attention to herself, always encouraging others. We couldn’t let this adventure go by, simply had to hear more…
After many months of training in the sunshine and heat for a hot French ultra, the start more closely resembled that of a soggy Welsh autumn day…
The first climb required a complete outfit change after a thorough soaking but it was a great flowing trail throughout the rest of the day. Another soaking before Champex-Lac, where Rich was waiting with clean clothes and some warm food. Setting off into the night, the skies cleared and the full moon rose above Martigny.
Reaching Triente checkpoint, Caru had a double headtorch failure, which she thought would be a race ender but managed to charge the torch and have a 2 hour nap, and set off again on the big climb to Vallorcine. The early morning hours were beautiful with a full moon and stars out,and as soon as the sun came out it was a gorgeous sunny day.
After reaching Vallorcine, the last checkpoint, Caru downed a cup of black instant coffee and some plain pasta for breakfast, and it was fast and flat through the valley floor, through the forest above Chamonix, over the footbridge where Asia was waiting, and through the cheering crowd of Chamonix to the finish line where Rich was holding fort
An epic finish to a great race!
