Today was a perfect example of what makes The Grapple Mill so special.

A huge thank you to everyone who gave up their Saturday to help improve the gym. What started as a job fitting new LED lights turned into another reminder of the incredible community we have built together.

Massive thanks to Garth Paddock, Director of Allied Pipefreezing Services and a valued member of The Grapple Mill, whose generosity helped make this project possible. Thank you also to Lewis for donating one of the lights, along with Andrew, Lee, Zach, Cllr Laura Diamond, and my two sons Josiah and Jonah, who all rolled their sleeves up and got stuck in.

The best part wasn’t just getting the job done. It was the laughter, the banter, the teamwork and the camaraderie throughout the day. There was plenty of hard work, plenty of laughs and a real sense of everyone pulling in the same direction. It’s easy to talk about community, but days like today show what it actually looks like in practice.

The Grapple Mill has never just been a gym. It is a team, a support network and, for many of us, an extended family. Whether people are helping with maintenance, supporting events, coaching classes, competing, or simply encouraging one another through training, there is always someone willing to step forward and help.

What we achieved today was far bigger than fitting a few lights. It was another example of people giving their time freely for the benefit of others, expecting nothing in return except the satisfaction of contributing to something they care about. That kind of spirit cannot be bought and it cannot be manufactured. It comes from having good people around you.

To everyone who helped today, thank you. The gym looks fantastic, but more importantly, days like this remind us why The Grapple Mill is such a special place to be. Together we train, together we grow and, when something needs doing, we pull together and get it done as a family. 💙🙏

Please support Allied Pipefreezing Services and thank everyone involved when you see them in the gym. They helped make a good place even better.

IMPORTANT SEMINAR UPDATE

It is with genuine disappointment that we have to announce that Michael Pixley’s seminar, scheduled for Tuesday 16th June, has unfortunately been postponed.

Due to unforeseen personal circumstances, Michael has had to cancel his entire UK trip, including a number of seminars and super fights. Out of respect for his privacy, we won’t be discussing the details, but what we will say is that this is a difficult situation for him both personally and professionally.

For many athletes at Michael’s level, competing, teaching seminars and travelling are not hobbies. They are their livelihood. This tour represented a significant amount of work and income, and we know how much effort goes into making these opportunities happen. Everyone at The Grapple Mill is incredibly grateful for Michael’s professionalism throughout this process, and we want to publicly wish him and his family all the very best.

The good news is that we have already secured a new date.

I’m really excited to share that we’ve partnered with MAAT at The Grapple Mill! Honestly, this is a game changer for us. Keeping track of payments, sign-ups, and class bookings used to be a real headache, especially because we’re not a gym that chases profits or racks up fees.

We are a small gym all about community, friendship, and that good vibe. MAAT takes all that stress off our shoulders, no more chasing down payments or paperwork. And it’s not just for gyms like ours, it works brilliantly for bigger, business minded gyms too.

What really sets them apart, though, is the people behind it, they’re not just some faceless company. They call me, check in, and make sure I’m getting the most out of the app. For me, that kind of customer care is second to none, and it’s exactly the kind of people I want to work with. So, scan the QR code, download the app, and if you’re new, we’ve got special discounts for you. Let’s keep building something great together.

Our adult classes at The Grapple Mill have been on fire this week!

We kicked things off Monday with Kris Leeson, diving deep into back control perfecting traps, submissions, and escapes.

Tuesday was all about the Gi with Josh, where we honed the Kimura trap system, crucifix entries, and control concepts. Wednesday, a smaller class, mixed Gi and NOGi, where we worked a slick modified Ezekiel choke from the back and gift wrapping techniques from Luke's class.

And tonight, Jayden Broad’s comp class, keeping the focus on back control as we hit week 7 of our 8 week curriculum. Let’s keep pushing, momentum is everything!

just have to say, the culture we have at The Grapple Mill is something I never could have imagined. It has grown so organically, from absolute beginners stepping onto the mats for the first time, all the way to students earning their colored belts, each one of them developing with grit and dedication. And what blows me away even more is that this gym, which started as just an idea, has become a real community. It’s no longer just mine; it belongs to everyone who walks through the door. They have taken ownership in a way that is humbling, students are building websites, they’re running social media, they’re handling admin work, they’re showing up and pouring their hearts into this place.

And it’s not because I asked them to; it’s because they love it, because they care, because this is theirs as much as it is mine. I can feel it in every class, every conversation, every little thing they do. And I truly believe that this culture we have here is second to none. I don’t think there’s another gym out there quite like us. And if there is, I would love to hear their story, because from where I’m standing, I haven’t seen anything more real, more powerful, more ours.

just have to say, so many gyms out there try to bring in other people’s purple belts, brown belts, and all that dedication from outside, but we have built this as a collective, from the ground up, together. Of course, the coaches have played a massive role in shaping this culture, but the truth is, nothing has changed. The core spirit, the way we care for each other, the way we grow, that has always been real. This is ours, from the first step on the mat to every single milestone we hit. And no matter how far we go, that truth stays the same.
