Most of us spend all day breathing without even thinking about it.

One of the things I've been exploring in my yoga teacher training is pranayama – the ancient yogic practice of intentionally regulating the breath in different ways.

As someone who likes to be active and doesn't always find it easy to sit still, these practices don't necessarily come naturally to me.
But, I like that they give me a way to slow down and feel more settled.

This week I've been exploring anuloma, pratiloma and ujjayi breath as part of my home practice.

Getting together with people I'm learning with is one of my favourite parts of training.

We've had a couple of months' break from our training days, so it felt like a mini reunion today.

Some of us have been meeting online to practise presentations and give each other feedback. Today, I got to see how people's teaching had developed as they refined their ideas and made them their own.

I enjoyed the discussions, the shared exploration, and the way everyone supported each other's learning.

It's easy to think of learning as something we do on our own, but days like today remind me how important it can be to learn together.

I'm working on a presentation about inclusion in yoga.

It's something that's important to me, and one of the reasons I chose this particular teacher training course. The teacher who recommended it to me broke postures down into stages, so they were accessible to the whole class.

I like that approach. Not everyone comes into a class with the same experience, confidence, mobility, or goals, and I think yoga is at its best when there's space for that.

While I'm thinking about this topic, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

What helps you feel welcome and included in a class?

Comments and DMs both welcome.

Over the past few weeks I’ve been working on a detailed profile of Vrikshasans (Tree Pose) - looking at how the pose works, common cautions, benefits, and ways to adapt it for different bodies and experience levels.

The final part of the assessment was leading it as a full session with my group.

The moment that stayed with me was someone saying they’d never been able to do Tree Pose before, but because of the way I broke it down, they managed it today.

That made my day.

Passing this assignment means I’ve now been signed off to start setting up and running my own classes as part of the next stage of teacher training.

Very excited for what comes next.

Something that stayed with me from teacher training today.

Everyone’s limbs and proportions are different, which means the same pose can look completely different from one person to another.

It made me reflect on the kind of yoga teacher I want to be; supporting people to explore and progress wherever they’re starting from.

Testing out the warm-up I’ll be leading for Friday’s hip-opening class.

My sister and I spent some time exploring the sequence together so I could practise talking it through and see how it felt for others.

We mostly followed the plan, but also wandered into a bit of Wild Thing and a short visualisation about light and personal boundaries.

I'm really enjoying having the space to experiment a bit with my yoga teacher training - trying things out, adapting the plan, and seeing what emerges.

A question my teacher asked me in training made me think:
Do you roll over your toes?

In this transition, rolling over the toes can load small joints that aren’t built for sustained weight.
For some bodies, that feels fine. For others (including me), it doesn’t.

That’s why I flip my toes instead. It feels more supportive and steady for me.

Some cues are there to keep you safe and well aligned, but don’t force anything that doesn't feel right for your body.

In yoga I’m learning about sthira (steadiness) and sukha (ease). That balance between doing enough and not overdoing it.

🌿 Helpful in yoga and in life 🌿

In yoga, it might mean:

🦢 feeling supported, not strained
🦢 breathing easily
🦢 choosing something I could stay with

In everyday life, pausing to ask “Is this effort sustainable?” helps me to notice where a change is needed.

It's not usually about stopping, but adjusting how I’m trying.

Have you ever noticed a moment where a small adjustment helped you keep moving forward?

I used to think yoga meant tuning everything else out. I’m learning it’s more about staying connected while things are going on.

🌀 noticing when my attention drifts
🌀 gently bringing it back
🌀 staying with what’s here, rather than waiting for everything to be perfect

There are always distractions. Lists in my head. Moments where I’m physically present but mentally somewhere else.

But when I catch myself really experiencing what I’m doing; a movement, a conversation, or the place I’m in, it feels like I’m actually living my life rather than just rushing through it.

That’s what yoga is giving me at the moment.

Assessment day today - leading a breathing and relaxation practice 🧘🏻‍♀️

One thing I really noticed: it’s hard to sound calm when you don’t quite feel it yet.

Because it was being assessed, my mind was busy with room layout, timing, and making sure I hadn’t missed anything. I could feel myself holding all that at the start.

As the practice went on, I settled 🍃

My breath slowed, my voice softened, and I felt more present.

It’s shown me something important for next time: taking a moment to pause and steady myself before I begin matters just as much as the words I use 🤍

I’m learning that teaching involves noticing myself just as much as guiding others.
