While I have a little time , I thought I’d answer a question I get asked regularly, especially as Pilates is becoming ever more popular.
‘What makes a good Pilates instructor?’
“A good Pilates instructor combines solid anatomical knowledge with sharp observation skills, clear communication, and deep empathy. They focus on your individual form, offer meaningful modifications, and watch you move rather than just working out alongside you. “
Certified training: Look for a comprehensive certification from a recognized Modern Pilates or similar reputable program that requires hundreds of hours of study and practical and observed exams. This cannot be achieved through an online only course .
Active IQ or YMCA LEVEL 3 and can demonstrate commitment to continuous learning .
Active observation: This is a skill learned through experience and knowledge
Clear cueing. Not just how to do the exercise but why.
Hands on correction : The smallest correction can change how you benefit from the exercise.
Adaptability: Not just for experience level but also adaptation for injury , osteoporosis, pelvic floor , autoimmune conditions etc
