Morton Thistle 2–6 Cambusdoon Colts
Final League Match – Thornhill
Cambusdoon Colts brought their league campaign to a spectacular close with a stunning 6–2 away win over Morton Thistle, completing a remarkable turnaround after a difficult first‑half display.
Play proved scrappy from the start, with tricky underfoot conditions making control difficult. The Colts created the first real opening: Rhys gathered the ball in midfield, surged past two defenders down the right and cut inside to shoot, only to be denied by a solid block. After that, Morton took complete command, dominating the middle of the park. Mason Riggans was the visitors’ early hero — earning the referee’s Man of the Match award — producing two brilliant sliding challenges to keep the hosts at bay. The pressure eventually told, though; a dangerous corner swung across the six‑yard box, evaded everyone, and fell kindly for a Morton player to turn and fire low past Lewis to open the scoring. Further stubborn defending and reliable goalkeeping kept the deficit at 1–0 going into the break.
Half‑time changes transformed the contest. The Colts emerged far sharper, more aggressive and cohesive, immediately unsettling the home side. After the Morton keeper was forced into a clearance, Cael Campbell — later named Coaches’ Man of the Match — won possession and sent Jack racing down the left. His through‑ball found Riley, whose shot was blocked, but Oscar pounced to pivot and smash a powerful finish in off the post for a brilliant equaliser.
It was 2–1 soon after. Alvaro’s diligent tracking back won the ball, and a slick move involving Calum, Murray and Oscar sent Riley clear to slot home confidently. Cambusdoon pushed hard for a third, but Morton fought back strongly, enjoying a 10‑minute spell of intense pressure where Cael made three vital saves to keep his side ahead. From one long clearance, a fortunate bounce beat a Morton midfielder and fell to Riley, who raced away and drilled a low shot into the corner to make it 3–1.
The hosts hit back quickly, scoring from another unchallenged corner to reduce the gap to 3–2 and set up a tense finale. Fresh legs proved decisive: Harry, Ethan and Calum were introduced, and Harry’s alert defensive work forced a throw‑in. Taken quickly, a neat sequence of passes sent Riley through again — he calmly slid the ball under the advancing keeper for 4–2.
Five followed shortly after. Oscar’s strong run set up Riley on the edge of the area; his thunderous strike crashed off the bar, but Ethan controlled the loose ball superbly 16 yards out and guided it home. Riley was then given a well‑deserved rest, replaced by Kurtis — who made an instant impact. Within a minute, a long clearance sent him clear from his own half, and he coolly fired in off the post from just outside the box to wrap up a 6–2 victory.
A sensational team performance brought the curtain down on the league season in style. Thanks go to Morton Thistle for hosting; both sides now look ahead to a rematch at the upcoming festival.
